So what is a shoujo-ai exactly? Basically, it's a genre of anime that has a love story between two girls as a focus point. There may even be other heterosexual relationships on the side, but the focus relationship must be with two females.
In simple terms, shoujo ai is more your standard innocent romance between two girls while yuri adds in the sexual element of romance. Both are about the love between two girls, but you can expect stronger content depending on the tag.
Shoujo ai is just a girlxgirl love story with most likely no sex. Yaoi is sometimes generalized by people to mean both "yaoi" and shounen ai thought, same with yuri.
Shoujo (少女 meaning young girl) is a category of manga/anime marketed to girls, typically 8-18 years old. It is one of the four main categories of manga/anime along with shounen (for boys), seinen (for men), and josei (for women).
Girls' Love or GL, referred to by fans as “yuri,” is a literary genre or media that showcases romantic relationships between female characters. GL covers a wide variety of creative platforms like literary works, fan fiction, manga, anime, and even video games.
Shōnen manga (少年漫画), also romanized as shonen or shounen, are Japanese comics mainly marketed and aimed at a young teen male readership. These graphic novels and comics are primarily for boys between the ages of 12 through 18.
In a strict sense, josei refers to manga marketed to an audience of adult women, contrasting shōjo manga, which is marketed to an audience of girls and young adult women.
