For the initial drawing of the actual hair you can start with the sides followed by the back. You can indicate the front section of the hair with just one line.
One good reason for this is that if you are drawing multiple frames of animation or multiple panels of a manga it will simply be too time consuming to draw anything overly detailed.
Erase the parts of the head hidden by the hair and add a few lines to show the inner folds of the front and back hair. You will generally want to position these folds in between the hair clumps as that is where these will usually tend to form in real hair.
From the hairline draw two lines going towards the sides of the head to indicate the front hair. To show that the hair is curly you can draw these lines in light waves.

Start by following the curvature of the head, and then straighten each line once you’re halfway down. Afterward, connect each end of the hair to the hairline using a line. Add some details to the hair by drawing several lines from the roots to the ends of the hair. Get rid of the lines that indicate the head and the hairline.
Like clothing, anime hair can help you bring out your character’s personality.
To achieve this look, you’ll need to draw a few spiky sections. The sections should come down from the hairline and curve to one side. Outline the top, sides, and ends of the hair. Sketch curved lines along both sides of the head, down to where you want the hair to end.
Measure 1/5 th of the height of the head and draw an arch from one side of the head to the other. Make sure you follow the curvature of the head as you draw.
Give the hair more depth by adding some detail inside the outline. Add some lines to break up the hair sections.
First start with the basics of drawing hair. The simple short hairs for anime can be drawn in three simple steps.
Here are some different illustrations showing how to drawings anime and manga hairstyles for a female character. Different hairstyles have different approaches to draw and given below are some of the popular anime hairstyles examples.
There can be a many different styles of hair which you can draw. Some of them are covered in the above Illustration. You can use the above illustration and can combine it to form a new type of hairstyle which Suits your character.
Anime girl ears drawing. To place the ears first draw a horizontal line directly though the middle of the head and then draw another line between that and the chin. Draw the ears between these two lines.
Most female anime characters tend to have big eyes, a small mouth, nose and chin and a fairly round face. The lips are usually either very lightly defined or not drawn at all.
Anime girl face drawing. You can add some very basic shading to your drawing to make it stand out a lot more. Anime uses what is known as “Cel” style shading (basically shading with no gradients) which generally makes shading fair fast and easy. The way the shading is applied will be determined by two things.
The way the shading is applied will be determined by two things. The areas that are naturally darker and the areas that have shadows cast on them.
The bottom lip will be positioned between the nose and the bottom of the chin. Draw the mouth itself slightly above that.
You can pretty much draw the mouth as one or two lines (really just one line with a break in the middle for the front view). If you want a happier/friendlier looking character you can draw it with a bit of a curve.
For the front view you can basically project two sets of lines down from the oval/circle that curve to meet at the chin.
To draw anime girl’s hair, first gain a basic understanding of where the head is beneath the hair, then draw a detailed sketch as an underdrawing, then draw final line art on top of the sketch, and finally finish the drawing with basic shading.
In step 1: identify the location of the head. You can even draw a bald character before you map hair onto their head. Step 2: in the underdrawing stage I am focused on shapes, (overall shape of the hair), and lines leading to the tips of the hair in different areas. Step 3: here is the final step for this example.
Although anime usually refers to animated, and manga usually refers to drawn (printed) art , the general style and approach to drawing is the same.
Regardless of the drawing instrument, line control is a combination of input from the brain and muscle memory of the arm and hand.
So here is the underdrawing step. We identified it earlier as step 2. However, as you get better, you will inevitably complete step 1 and step 2 at the same time.
In this front view, the eye line will always be around the center of the vertical line between the chin and the to top the head. So if you measure, the space between the chin and the eyes, is roughly the same as between the eyes and the top of the head.
As you can see I changed the design a lot. It is okay to step away from the underdrawing sketch if you feel like it will improve your art. The sketch underneath is just there as a guide.
While artists have varying preferences about how to structure an anime character’s head and face, they all start with the same basic principle: First draw a circle, and then draw a horizontal line and vertical line directly ...
Start by sketching a curved upper eyelid, then draw a short line extending down from the outer corner of the eye. Leave the inner corner of the eye open for a softer look. Then, add a circle in the middle of the eye as the iris. Draw a smaller circle—the pupil—in the middle of the iris.
When drawing anime characters, the eyes are typically a focal point, while the nose and mouth remain simple.
The legs of an anime character should be approximately as long as the top half of the character, from the top of the head to the waist. Finally, add in the arms. A good rule of thumb is to align the elbow with the character’s waist, and then extend the rest of the arm (including the hand) to about mid-thigh.
The basic anatomy of an anime face starts with a circle with a vertical line and horizontal line directly through the center.
Leave the inner corner of the eye open for a softer look. Then, add a circle in the middle of the eye as the iris. Draw a smaller circle—the pupil—in the middle of the iris. To create primary and secondary light reflections, add in one or two additional circles within the iris.
While you will mostly ink with a black pen, it can also be helpful to have a white jelly pen on hand—you can use this to add highlights, like the reflection points in the character’s eyes. You may also choose to add additional colors with colored pencils or medium of your choice.
This method is a baseline to a typical head and does not serve as a concrete rule to varying head shapes and proportions! First of all, this method suggests that a head can be split into three sections: the distance between the brow, tip of nose and chin are equal. The mouth is right between the nose and chin.
So top edge = soft, bottom edge = hard. Paint some saturated pinks and blues at the edges of the dull grey shadows for the subsurface scattering effect.
From other angles, the loomis head takes into account foreshadowing, meaning facial features such as the eyes and ears wrap around the head.
Clearly, the ear sits between the eyes and nose, and will be higher or lower depending on the head’s angle. As the head tilts up, ears become lower than the eyes, and as the head tilts down, the eyes become higher than the eyes, for example.
This is why aligning the eyes at the first horizontal line of the rule of thirds can do justice to a portrait.
The mouth is right between the nose and chin. It is important to take note that the top half of the head is not a sphere, but rather a sphere with its sides chopped off. Now let’s take a look at the loomis head method from different angles. From other angles, the loomis head takes into account foreshadowing, meaning facial features such as ...
For three-quarter portraits and especially side profile portraits, consider the direction of the body and eyes. Leave space in front of the subject so that the subject has space to look into rather than looking directly out of the frame. Definitely also leave space above the head. You don’t want the viewer to feel cramped or crowded as they look into the frame.
To draw anime hair, start by drawing the outline of the head and the hairline. Next, draw the basic outline of your desired hairstyle, making sure to focus on which direction the hair strands flow. Then, add details to make the hair more realistic, and emphasize the outlines by tracing over them with a dark marker.
Sometimes when I draw the hair, it looks like it blows one way, but then other strands are blowing the other way. Stand by a mirror, get your blow dryer or a fan, and test it out. Observe how your hair is blowing. If you have short hair, ask a friend or family member to stand in.
Use a dark marker on the outlines of the hair you have drawn and erase all unnecessary lines and curves from your outline .

Draw a sketch for a man's head to provide framework for the hair.
You could use the shadow of the hair to fall over the eyes giving it a gloomy look. Spiked hair can look evil sometimes. Slicked, oily hair can give the impression of being greasy in character as well as in hair. Check out cartoon character and movie villains for an idea of what might work.
It is not exactly necessary, but solely drawing hair floating in the air is an image which is rarely drawn. Even for the purpose of practicing how to draw hair you should draw it with head so you get a feeling how hair, face, eyes and so on work together, so that your "real" drawings have a realistic and good looking outcome.
