Why is Sword Art Online (SAO) hated/bad?
Is SAO a bad anime? SAO is, at worst, average. It’s a series that knows and accepts that it isn’t high art, and runs with it. Taken as a genre show, it gets a lot right, even if there are legitimate criticisms.
If the SAO anime had ended for good after the first or second season, it would have been self-contained enough that there wouldn’t be such pressure to “buy the manga/LN”… unless you just love the story enough that you want to see more. What ruined Sword Art Online? It was ruined on ep 15/16.
Conventional opinions will always attack the unconventional because it challenges the norm, and threatens traditional or so called “correct” ways of thinking. Sword Art Online is that kind of anime that seems to evoke that kind of reaction. Related: How The Anime Community Has Evolved Over The Years (For Better Or Worse)
Foremost, though, is that SAO knows how to end an arc. Every arc in the first two seasons ends in a satisfactory manner. If SAO had ended at the end of Aincrad, at the end of ALO, the end of GGO, or the end of Mother’s Rosario, it would have been enough.
“Sword Art Online is the worst anime of all time.” That's a perhaps surprisingly common sentiment among anime fans, many of whom may enjoy isekai shows but dislike how SAO has become such a representative of the genre, or who eschew extremely popular anime titles in favor of those a bit more off the beaten track.
-The lack of realistic overweight gamer or even parents in the series. -Randomly generated avatars used as an excuse to make the main character look like a girl. -Overly long exposition dumps in cafe's and restaurants. -Not explaining things like why the main character's illusions are solid.
Sword Art Online is a very interesting anime in the beginning. However, the story goes downhill & redundant after the first half of season 1, and that's why it is hated so much. The anime has now picked up a good pace in the latest season, SAO S4 Alicization.
Includes violent scenes, including some of a sexual nature. One of the things that first strikes you when you come across the latest collection of SAO is the rating: 18. Previous releases have been given 15 ratings but not 18.
SAO's age rating is 18... : r/swordartonline.
Beloved by many, even the biggest fan will admit there are some aspects of SAO that are fully understood only by few, and, for new fans, it can get downright confusing.

SAO is technically not classified as a "harem anime," though sadly it does retain a lot of similarities to that genre. Tons of girls have swarmed around Kirito, usually from being saved by him or impressed by his "skills," who all adore him. Sadly for them, he's only interested in Asuna.
Sword Art Online is an emotional, sad series that showcases the struggles of survival, being in a relationship, and even disease in SAO season 2.
The series is uncensored on DVD/Blu-ray releases, Netflix, and streaming services such as Amazon, Hulu, and iTunes.
Yes, SAO is kid friendly. But to be honest, SAO was never meant for children as the audience. The prime target was and always has been 18+ teens and adult nerds.
There is no adult content. It have violence like it shows dead bodies and some people are massacred by Titans however it does not show direct killings means killing is not shown but bodies are.It is really good for ages 13 and above. It is good for entertainment also. 1 person found this helpful.
In the most recent arc, they reveal something called "Incarnation.". Basically, your will can have affect on the world around you, and yourself. One example, spoilers.
Bad anime is bad. But wasted potential is terrible. Imagine seeing a race. There is runner who just looks terrible, unfit and will most likely loose. There is also a shining Athlete, who boasts himself on being amazing, and everyone can see his potential. The race starts, unfit runner will come last, no doubt about it.
Asuna is reduced to a damsel in distress who gets felt up by a tentacle monster. Except for when she saves his butt when SAO and when she kills the SAO Asuna was absolutely not a damsel, especially when we see that she's more akin to Kirito's equal (maybe even superior) in Mother's Rosario. 0. Basically, if all the secondary characters from Sword Art Online are removed, it won’t change the storyline at all. The secondary characters have no development and are basically of no consequence throughout the anime.
Another reason why people don’t like Sword Art Online is the hype. Sword Art Online has a rating of more than 8 on MyAnimeList. The fanbase of Sword Art Online is huge and essentially wherever you go they will be arguing about why it’s not worth it. Some people just hate anime for the sake of hating it.
Kirito’s Sword is inspired by Guts’ sword (Berserk), which doesn’t suit him at all. Guts was a maniac who was defeated by demons countless times, whereas, Kirito is just an average teenager who just happens to be undefeated. Because of Kirito’s highly powerful character, he is also known as the undefeated “Jesus-Kun”.
At the launch of the game, 10,000 people had connected themselves to the virtual reality of Sword Art Online. The plot takes a twist when people realize that they can’t quit the game.
Kirito is a really good gamer and a cool guy and is unbelievably powerful in the anime. If you’ve played any MMO RPG game you would know that it’s really hard to succeed without joining a guild. Kirito never joined a guild but defeated every Boss level with ease. This is where things start going south.
She isn’t shown as an independent strong woman. She’s clingy and needs Kirito to protect her and is basically reduced to a damsel in distress. Throughout the anime, Kirito and Asuna live an amazing life inside the game. Both of them are happy – going on side adventures and exploring the world of Sword Art Online.
In the pilot of Sword Art Online, Kirito meets a guy named Klein. Klein is a typical shonen side character. The trouble starts when there’s very little involvement of the secondary characters in the show. We see Klein 5 times in the entire first season.
