Female anime eyes are usually bigger and rounder than male anime eyes. Make the eyes about 1/6th the height of the head and 1/4th the width of the head, if you're drawing one. That way, they'll look big and exaggerated.

A basic understanding of the anatomy of the eye. Knowing common elements that make most eyes look like anime eyes. A step-by-step approach to drawing anime eyes while implementing these common elements. A quick note, before going further, I will use the term anime to mean both anime and manga for simplicity.
Highlights from at least 2 light sources. White or bright circles or ovals appearing in stylized anime eyes are representative of highlights on the surface of the eye. Note here that usually one highlight is dominant and is depicted larger, and the second subordinate and depicted smaller.
A drop shadow from the upper eyelid covers the iris and the sclera one third or sometimes half of the way down. (Confused about what iris and sclera are? Scroll up to the anatomy section of this article, or click here to be taken there).
Upper eyelid crease. – The upper eyelid crease is a horizontal indent formed above the upper eyelid that appears in some people. Notably, it is prominently indicated in most anime eye drawings, and stylized into a curved line. It helps situate the anime eye drawing so it is a good idea to take notice of it.
– the iris is a ring shaped membrane, with an adjustable circular opening (pupil) in the center. The iris is what people talk about when they talk about eye color. (Some people confuse it with the pupil, so here is a tip to remember it better: eye color = iris color)
Fortunately, we all have a stylizer machine called the brain! In anime, there is a spectrum of on one end, very large anime looking eyes, and some on the other end, that are pretty realistic with some stylization flare. I tend to like something in the middle, although a lot depends on the artwork itself.
Degrees of realism and stylization. In anime and manga, eyes are drawn in various degrees of stylization. Human anatomy in anime is stylized often to the point of being unrealistic, yet still very recognizable as the anime counterpart of the real world person the artwork is describing. This is an important point.
Simply bring a second oval-shaped line over the top your cheek line to form the basis of the eye. Next, draw the shape of your cartoon eye with a second oval-shaped line.
Instead of being technically correct, anime eyes are used to create life and expression within its characters. Anime eyes are rarely to scale and often have out-of-this-world features such as exaggerated eyelashes or eyebrows. Examples of anime eyes by Skillshare instructor Enrique Plazola.
With your eyebrows now in place, draw eyelashes and pupils to finish the outline of your realistic eye drawing. In step two, you created a “flipped up” line to hold space for your eyelashes. Now, fill the eyelashes in according to your reference photo. Then, add a smaller circular shape on the inside of the iris to show the pupils.
Building upon the line you drew in step one, fan the right side of your line outward to create the angle of the eyelashes, then fill it in with two triangular shapes placed next to each other on the base side . This will hold space for your anime eye’s eyelashes as the drawing continues to develop.
The eyelid is formed with a shallowly curved line that stretches from one side of the eye to the other. You can experiment with the thickness of your eyelid line, as it will also form the basis for the upper lash line, or even choose to create a secondary line to create a little depth.
To utilize negative space, look at the reference photo and pull out shapes that you can transfer onto your drawing paper. Within the tear ducts, for example, there is a small triangular shape that can be included to help form the boundaries of the sclera and irises.
The pupil is formed in the center of the iris that you drew in step three, and as you’re filling it in, be sure to leave a small, white circular space in the middle to create a highlight. You can also add more small circles to create highlights within the iris itself.
Color the iris around the pupil. This will give your character a little more life and realism. Common colors for eyes include blue, green, brown, gray, and hazel . However, you can get creative with your cartoon and use other colors, such as purple, orange, or red.
Circular eyes seem to make the most sense being placed evenly apart from each other, as opposed to side-by-side. How high or low the eyes sit on the face could help convey an emotion, so take that into consideration as you begin to draw.
The thickness of the iris helps your audience better understand how your cartoon character feels. The color that you choose for the iris can also help to convey an emotion. Or, the color can simply demonstrate your unique creativity and the embodiment of what you envision your cartoon to look like.
Circles are a great shape for cartoon eyes because humans do not have circular eyes. Use your compass to make these circles. Be sure to adjust the angle of your compass in order to make smaller circles. Make the circles large enough to leave room for pupils inside.
It will be helpful to draw a perfect circle using a compass, if one is available to you. Set the width of your compass to a small or medium-sized circle. Place the point of your compass on the sketch paper, and gently place the pencil tip of the compass down on the paper.
The shape of the character's head will inspire you in the type of eyes you give your character. It will also help you determine whether your character is male or female or maybe even an animal or monster! Drawing the shape of the head will include the chin/jawline, ears, and hairline.
For cartoon eyes with this shape, typically the wider end is placed on the inner part of the eye, close to where the nose will be. Sometimes the wide end is exaggerated, making the inner part of the eye very large, while the outer part of the eye tapers down to a small point.
For placing anime eyes on the head draw a horizontal line through the middle of the head and draw the eyes below that line. Real eyes would be drawn directly on that line or even above it but anime eyes tend to be drawn lower down. If you are drawing squinted eyes you may want to draw them a little further down from the halfway line as the top ...
Anime eyes of older male characters tend to be drawn narrower than those of younger characters (bigger and wider eyes can make characters look younger). Anime eyes of younger male characters are often drawn very similar to or exactly the same as those of female characters.
Anime male eye reflection. The main reflection of the main light source. The shape of the reflection will be based on the shape of the light source (the sun or in indoor lighting for example) but generally you can just draw a round or oval shape.
Anime male eye iris. The pupils in anime are often drawn as ovals (though sometimes they can also be drawn round like real eyes). You can see that for this particular example much of the pupil is covered by the eyelids.
Anime male eye drop shadow. There will usually be a shadow at the top of the eyes or a reflection of the eyelashes making the top darker. You can indicate this area to shade it later.
Shade and color the eye. As mentioned earlier you can use the same color for the pupil and the shadow. Keep the reflections white unless the light source is of a particular color (for example a red sunrise).
