One of the great things about Google Chromecast is how easy and streamlined the setup process is. If you’ve got a TV with an HDMI port, phone or tablet and WiFi network, you’re good to go. (Keep a lookout for our upcoming guide on how to set up Google Chromecast.)
Chromecast is the name for Google’s line of streaming devices, or dongles. Streaming devices are hardware that connect to your TV and internet, allowing you to stream and cast content like movies or music on your TV.
If you fancy a night in with Stranger Things or The Crown but want the full-screen, home cinema experience, you might want to consider a Chromecast. It uses a protocol called Google Cast to allow you to put your content up on the big screen and get the best out of your viewing time.
There are currently two Chromecast models available on the Google store: Chromecast and Chromecast with Google TV. The classic Chromecast lets you stream content from your mobile device or tablet to your TV, it functions solely as a casting device.
With the Chromecast with Google TV, you can give voice commands by pressing the Google Assistant button. It also has a voice match feature. It works by familiarizing Google Assistant with your voice, so it can customize the interface specifically for you.
Chromecast with Google TV comes with a small remote control, and you can also control the Chromecast Ultra with a Stadia controller. Example voice commands could be “open Amazon Prime Video” or “play (insert favorite Amazon Prime Video series here).”
Chromecast Ultra and Chromecast with Google TV can stream up to 4K. The support center lists the following requirements for watching in 4K:
If you see a message like “No nearby devices were found” in the cast menu on your phone, and there’s no option to enable wireless display, that means your phone doesn’t have the built-in ability to cast to a Fire Stick. Android used to include this functionality by default, but Google removed it in Android 6.0. Some phone manufacturers add it back in, while others don’t.
It’s difficult to compare Chromecast devices and Fire TV devices directly because they do slightly different things . Chromecast devices are designed to receive input from a phone, tablet, or computer wirelessly, while Fire Stick and other Fire TV devices are designed primarily to function alone without any input from other devices.
How do I cast to a Fire Stick from a PC? To stream from a Windows PC to a Fire TV Stick, press and hold the Fire Stick's Home button, then select Mirroring. On your PC, open Notifications, click Connect, and select your Fire Stick. You'll see your PC screen mirrored on the TV.
If your phone doesn’t support built-in casting, then you’ll have to use a third-party app. There are a lot of different apps that provide some level of streaming functionality with a variety of results. Screen Mirroring is an example that works on both Android and iPhone.
To cast to a Fire Stick from an Android phone that supports Miracast, you need to put the Fire Stick into display mirroring mode, and then connect your phone. Once you’ve established a connection, your phone’s display will be mirrored on the display that’s connected to your Fire Stick. Here’s how to cast to Fire Stick like Chromecast:
If your phone supports Miracast, then you can cast from your phone to your Fire Stick. If it doesn’t, then you will need to use a workaround like installing the Screen Mirroring app to both your Fire Stick and your phone.
Unlike other Chromecasts, the Chromecast with Google TV can be used either with or without a phone just like a Fire Stick.
