Creating an anime eye step-by-step using CLIP STUDIO PAINT
There is really not that much to it. Usually the colors in anime or cartoon eyes are flat, so all you need to do for them to look more painterly is to add more shadows and lights the way it would work in real life, and we saw how to do it in the realistic style, so you have to combine them. 8.-
Adding details with CLIP STUDIO PAINT it extremely easy; this is why it's the best tool to create anime content. It has a WHOLE section where you can use sparkly and cute brushes to add details in either your pieces or your manga sheets!
In Clip Studio Paint, tools are organized by type. Each Tool has sub tool categories. The drawing tools are all in the same category in the sub tool palette. Tip: Try out different Pen and Pencil tools to find the ones that suit you. You can use Pencil tools for sketching and Pen tools for line art.
This is the most used and common shape used to make anime eyes; and I think you can quite figure why: most protagonists have round eyes, mostly because they are gentle, and you have to feel secure when you look at them. So, if you're characther is sweet in the heart, a pair of cute, round eyes are the best for him.
Starting to create and color the eye Start by adding the base color of your liking, and then in a multiply layer start adding shadows with a gentle brush; (I'm mostly gonna use Watercolors one); create gentle strokes starting from the top corner of the iris.

In this simple tutorial we will learn to paint anime eyes using multiple layers in Clip Studio Paint (CSP). To simplify the explanation and avoid drawing the eyes in perspective, I created a drawing of an anime character seen from the front and using the symmetrical ruler function ("Symmetrical ruler") of CSP.
First of all we will draw the base of our eye that consists of 3 elements: the sclera (white part of the eye), the shadow cast by the upper eyelashes and the base of the iris. Use a layer for each part and do the same for the rest of the steps.
Next, we will draw the sclerocorneal limbus. To do this, we create a selection by left clicking on the layer corresponding to the base of the iris while pressing the "Control" key (Ctrl-LMB means "control and left mouse button"). By the way, if you don't see the "Selection Launcher", you can enable it in "View> Selection Launcher".
To draw the pupil I used the selection tool "Ellipse". In this tutorial, in order to focus on the necessary layers, we have drawn the eyes straight ahead. Thanks to this we can simply place the pupil in the center of the iris. In case you draw your character from another point of view you should consider the concavity of the iris and the pupil.
We continue with what is probably the most interesting element of anime eyes: the iris. To select the region of the iris I show you a little trick. First create a selection from the base of the iris using Ctrl-LMB as we saw in previous steps. Then, use Ctrl-Alt-LMB to subtract the regions corresponding to the limbus and pupil from the selection.
This step is optional and involves coloring the lines of the eyelashes, eyebrows and the crease of the eyelid. The method is simply to create a new layer on the lines and use the "Clip to Layer Below" option so that we do not paint beyond where we want.
Although this tutorial has focused on how to paint anime eyes, consider the importance of eyebrows in the expression of your character.
Anime-style or Cel Shading coloring is a style that mimics how traditional anime was animated. It applied simple shading without blending to make it easier to animate. To enhance this kind of coloring style, you can use other tools like gradients or effects.
There are also lots of other brushes you can use, such as airbrushes for simple gradients and decoration brushes for making patterns. Additionally, you can also download more brushes from Clip Studio Assets. Once you’ve finished your inking, use the pen tool and the fill tool to color.
All layers: will refer to all layers on the canvas. Reference Layer: will only refer to the layer that you set as a reference. Selected Layer: will only refer to the layers currently selected. Layer in folder: will refer only to the layers in the current folder. Please use them as needed.
To stop white pixels appearing in between your lines and the base colors, use the Fill up to vector path option in the Tool Property tab. Instead of filling up to the edge of the line, it will take the vector line into consideration, which means it will fill in all of the anti-aliasing parts of the line as well.
If you’re drawing a character from a reference image, you can use the subview to show the reference image and the color picker to make sure you are using the same colors as your reference. This is a very handy feature you can use instead of opening multiple reference images and switching through them.
ANIME. Anime eyes offer a lot of variations, especially in illustration, since they can have the flat colors that are used in T.V. shows, or a more painterly style with lots of details, since illustrations don’t have the same limitations as animation in regards to the amount of detail.
Here are some tips to make your eyes have a more “real” look: A-The sclera isn’t completely white, when you draw it white it looks more digital and fake, try to make just a bit darker and with a very slight pink hue, like that of the skin. You can do this with a soft brush at a very low opacity.
Really, when you think about it, all we have in this simplified style are the sclera, iris, upper eyelashes and the eyebrow. If you want to simplify it even more, you can get rid of the sclera and the eyelashes, so that you only have the iris and the eyebrows, and you will have something that looks more like a cartoon.
C- The pupil and the iris are not perfectly circular, and their edges are slightly soft, if you draw them with hard edges, they will look like stickers. Also, the edges of the pupil are a bit spiky.
That is why a lot of concept artist don’t have a distinct style, because they need to keep adapting and iterating, but even they, if you look very, very closely, you will find they have some things in common in each piece they draw. If you want to draw eyes in a specific style or like a specific artist that you like.
There are 2 main kinds of stylization: To combine 2 or more parts of the eye into one, Or to simply remove one or more parts. Now I will show you how to draw eyes in some of the more common styles, as well as how to come up with one of your own.
