Anime/manga characters dress very UNUSUAL because that what would appeal when it's 2-D. If you put them in regular clothes it just looks very boring and not eye-catching at all because it's flat and not 3-dimentional. That's why they also have unproportional figures as well and wild hair and color.
It's true that fashion influences anime but anime also has to make adjustments to them to make their characters simplified enough to recreate easily. Sometimes during this process, they invent styles that are simple to create but give the illusion that it is complicated. For example, throwing on a bunch of unecessary belt buckles, multiple zippers, sticking a ventilation pipe on your shirt, adding shoulder pads to a normal shirt, etc.

I notice that anime fans out there don't really have a style. They mostly sell anime T-shirts, Hoodies and that's pretty much it. They don't have special pants or shorts made for anime fans. They don't have shoes that resemble anime character's shoes. They just pretty much have really normal clothes with anime logos or characters printed on them. So it is a very generic look.
