Levi places a thunder spear in Zeke’s stomach as a threat rather than as a device to kill. Yet, he was unable to predict the odds that Zeke played with and was thrown off the cart by the explosion induced by Zeke. The repercussions of the explosion inflicted Zeke as well — leaving him with a mutilated body on the verge of death.
Hange tells Pieck and Commander Magath that Levi is “ nothing more than a harmless man who just refuses to die ” in an attempt to quell any aggressiveness from their side. Levi seems to be on the road to recovery. However, it is still uncertain whether he’ll return back to completely normal .

Episode 16 saw Levi blown away by the explosion of the Thunder Spear lodged in Zeke’s torso. As stated by a shocked Commander Hange, exposure at such a close range would cause shredded internal organs and death on impact.

Spoiler alert. In chapter 114 of the manga, Levi is hitted by an explosion provocated by Zeke. Isayama wanted us to think that he might have died for it BUT in chapter 115, Hanji finds his body and runs away with it.
She likely told them he was dead to prevent them from shooting him to his actual death , then made her escape with her friend. Also, Isayama may be cruel to the world of Attack on Titan, but Levi is one of the most beloved characters, and likely wouldn’t be killed off right now, if at all. However this may be true.
Levi then attaches a thunder spear to him in case Zeke tries to escape, the thunder spear would blow Zeke. After a minor exchange of dialogues, Zeke blows himself up and Levi at point blank range. Zeke soon recovers thanks to founder Ymir. Hange and team arrives and spot a scarred Levi.
However, Hange eventually finds him, and escapes into the ravine with his body: After this encounter, you don't hear or see Hange and Levi for 10 chapters.
As soon as one of the Yeagerist says that he will shoot Levi through the head Hange states that Levi is dead, and that it must have been instant! When the Yeagerists are distracted by a nearby titan, Hange launches herself into the river to escape, taking Levi with her!
Zeke spots the opportunity to flee however Levi kills all of his Titanized teammates and captures Zeke. Levi then attaches a thunder spear to him in case Zeke tries to escape, the thunder spear would blow Zeke.

Levi stepped up whenever Erwin was not able to fulfill his duties. One of the most important decisions Levi made was to let the commander die. Armin was also in critical condition and Levi chose to save him, believing that the commander had done enough for the world and that he should be at peace. It was a tough decision to make and Levi still wants revenge against Zeke.
The death that changed Levi's life the most was also the first person he lost, his mother. She lived in the Underground and worked in a brothel, where she went by the name "Olympia". It was very hard for her to raise her son but she loved him very much. She died from an unknown sickness and Levi was left on his own. He nearly died by not having anything to eat until Kenny came to see Kuchel and found his nephew instead. If it were not for Kuchel dying when Levi was so young, he may not have become as strong and serious as he is in the series. Kuchel's death changed Levi the most and the deaths he witnessed since has made him much stronger.
The whole thing was explained during an interview with one of Isayama 's editors. It was there Shintaro Kawakubo discussed some secrets behind the manga's finale, and he revealed Isayama wanted to kill off Levi before changing his mind.
Kawakubo said he had a meeting with Isayama any time the artist wanted to kill off a character. These meetings were held to discuss whether the death was meaningful or not. So when the pair talked over Levi's end, Isayama could not find any justifiable reason to kill the captain.
