Incarnation is a disjointed effort. Fast-moving and full of interesting sci-fi concepts, this anime series certainly keeps your attention with intense battle scenes and rapid-fire dialogue, but little attention is put toward characterization. May 22, 2019 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review… A.I.C.O.

‘A.I.C.O Incarnation’ is another old school thriller that has become a part of Netflix’s growing catalog of sci-fi anime. With a total of 12 episodes, the anime is packed with a whole lot of action, unexpected twists, a great cast and a surprisingly exhilarating soundtrack. What really makes this show stand out from all the others out there is how it manages to be simple with its story and yet, comprehensive enough to make it an enjoyable experience for a viewer.
Yuuya Kanazaki is the main male protagonist of the series who first appears as a transfer student at Aiko Tachibana’s school. Compared to all the other kids at the school, he seems to be very aloof and mature. After meeting Aiko, he tells her the truth about the impact that the “Burst” has had on her and takes her to the Primary point of the incident to unravel more secrets that it holds. Yuuya seems to be very mysterious at the beginning of the anime and nothing much is revealed about his past or where he comes from. The only thing that is known about him is that he really wants to bring an end to the “Burst”.
‘A.I.C.O Incarnation’ season 1 premiered on March 9, 2018 as an ONA on Netflix. It follows a completely original story which means that it has not been adapted from a manga or a light novel. So now that the creators of the show do not have to rely on any source material, coming up with a new season may not really be a big deal for them. Also, since the anime is a Netflix Original, it seems very less likely that it would come to an end only after one season. The reason behind this is that Netflix has invested quite a lot in their tie-ups with renowned Anime Studios. So most anime originals will, sooner or later, get a new season.
An original animation from studio Bones, A.I.C.O. Incarnation is directed by Kazuya Murata with character design by Hanaharu Naruko, the same duo that worked on Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. Just like Gargantia, A.I.C.O. is quintessential sci-fi. Bones, one of Japan’s most accomplished studios responsible for anime like My Hero Academia and Mob Pyscho 100, has produced A.I.C.O. as an anime series for Netflix. The result is a rather serious anime that follows a television series format. The year is 2035; the setting, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. A transmission from the Kurobe Dam reservoir had reported that artificial cells created at the Kiryu Biotech Research Facility (later referred to as the Primary Point) had grown out of control, swallowing everything in sight. Gates were built to hold the line and stop the spread of “Matter” just before it hit the Sea of Japan. This incident is referred to as the Burst, and all of the area upstream was deemed Malignant Matter Area; Divers are tasked with recovering research results in these heavily restricted and highly dangerous locations.
A.I.C.O. Incarnation’s sci-fi setting and the storytelling wrapped around it can bring surprises, but the action sequences with Matter feel lacking, and the slow story development in the first half does little to impress and keep you interested. A rather serious sci-fi anime, but it has its charms.
