FMA brotherhood is good anime but certainly not the greatest anime ever ,there are many anime which are more successful than it. Originally Answered: Why do so many people credit Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as the best anime of all time?
Many people began the franchise with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, the anime that was released after the manga was completed and follows it faithfully. Many also prefer Brotherhood to the 2003 anime. For those who are new on the Fullmetal Alchemist train, let me explain the series.
Best anime differs from person to person. For example, on MyAnimeList “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” has highest rating, but on AniDB highest rating belongs to “Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu”. Originally Answered: Why is fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood the greatest anime ever?

The storyline is very complex, engrossing, and incredibly epic. Every single one of the vast number of characters is interesting, ikeable, and compelling. The villians of the show are all excellent and have understandable motivations. The actions scenes are fast paced, breathtaking, and very well animated.
Overall, it's an incredible series. I'd recommend this to anime fans, and fans of fantasy or sci-fi of any kind (unless you just can't stand Japanese cartoons). FullMetal Alchemist is definitely one of the best television series out there.

Yes. You don't need to watch Fullmetal Alchemist to watch Brotherhood. Fullmetal Alchemist originally followed the manga, but then branched off and ended differently. Years later, the remake was made, and this one followed the manga to the end.
FMA is similar, but does all the things Naruto does better. It has better story, more compelling characters, darker shades of grey for its villains, and most of all a superior and well thought ending. So I would go with both FMAs over Naruto, as far as anime quality is concerned.
In a survey from Oricon in 2009, Fullmetal Alchemist ranked ninth as the manga that fans wanted to be turned into a live-action film. The series is also popular with amateur writers who produce dōjinshi (fan fiction) that borrows characters from the series.
2. Can You Watch FMA: B Without Watching FMA? You can absolutely watch Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood without watching Fullmetal Alchemist. Despite originating from the same manga, both the series are entirely different adaptations.

The story of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood recaps and continues the story of the original Fullmetal Alchemist. Edward and Alphonse Elric live in a world set in the 20th century in the fictional land of Amestris, ruled by King Bradley.
The characters in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are so rich with development it’s actually hard to believe. Ed, Al, Winry, Ling, Colonel Mustang, Hughes, and even Scar, each and every character in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood shows some major character development in one way or another at multiple points throughout the show’s 64 episode run.
The animation of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is by far one of the best I’ve seen, especially for being an anime released in 2009. The fight scenes are so absolutely beautiful to watch and the set-pieces in the show are nothing short of spectacular.
Fullmetal Alchemist is the story of Ed and Al trying to get their bodies back by looking for the mysterious Philosopher’s Stone, an alchemical reagent that allows you to bypass equivalent exchange. To aid their search, Ed enrolls as a governmental alchemist.
The original Fullmetal Alchemist anime from 2003 was released concurrently with the manga, and, like all series that do this, caught up with the issues before it was finished. As a result, the anime went off into its own direction. Many people began the franchise with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, the anime that was released after ...
It makes a little more sense when Ed says that yes, he’s the Fullmetal Alchemist—NO NOT HIM, THAT’S MY LITTLE BROTHER—and that people know who he is when he’s been going all around Amestris saving random towns. (They take the “Alchemist, be thou for the people” motto very seriously in the 2003 anime.)
Early episodes mentioned in Brotherhood are actually shown in the original anime. Some speculate that the producers of Brotherhood expected that most people had already seen the 2003 anime, and so didn’t bother with some of the episodic one-offs that establish the Elrics’ reputation.
Funimation is good with their dubs, hiring talent like Vic Mignogna (the literal best) and Caitlin Glass to play main characters. One thing I really appreciate is that many of the voice actors are the same between the original anime and Brotherhood. It makes watching the shows feel contiguous rather than choppy.
