18 WHITEBEARD. In One Piece, Edward Newgate, aka Whitebeard, captain of the Whitebeard Pirates, is hailed as the strongest man in the world. The first time we saw him on screen, we knew he’d be a powerhouse. His stature is imposing and his scars tell a tale of the countless battles he survived.
To put it simply, alchemists can transform and alter matter into other matter to suit their purposes. Edward stands out among other alchemists for a number of reasons. He’s the youngest State Alchemist in history, achieving his certification by the time he was 12. This alone proves that he is a capable combatant.
It’s violent and utterly devastating. But terrible circumstances always lead to interesting heroes, and Shinichi Izumi is one of the most unique in anime history. In this series, human bodies are taken over by parasitic aliens that feast on human flesh.
In every fictional super powered universe, and every genre, there is a narrative crafted around who reigns supreme and this is especially true for anime characters. Ninjas, mutants, demons, cyborgs and aliens litter the screen with sword strokes powerful enough to slice through steel and energy blasts that can level mountains. Anime has such a varied cast of characters and powers, it can sometimes be hard to judge who would beat who in a one on one fight. However, that doesn’t stop us from hypothesizing.
Yes, the Grand Priest from Dragon Ball Super is incredibly powerful, but until he throws down, we have to leave him off the list. That being said, we present to you, for the first time ever, the 25 most powerful anime characters ever ranked from the least to the most powerful.
One Punch Man is an action-packed anime that tells the story of an ordinary man with colossal strength. He is seeking powerful opponents that he can take on. Saitama, the main character, is on his journey while going through amusing situations and fight scenes that are still punchy (pun intended), even if he beats all other powerful characters with only one blow (the name tells it all)!
Takuma Sakamoto, a gamer who mysteriously enters the world of his most beloved MMORPG, Cross Reverie, appears as his character in the game: The Demon Lord Diablo. Two young girls, Rem and Shera, an elf, are also there. Shera tries to cast the spell to create Takuma, their new servant, but, thanks to his magic ring, which has the power of “Magic Reflection,” the attack is deflected.
When Sei Takanashi comes home after working for a long time, she is escorted off to the kingdom of Salutania by mysterious forces. Sei knows upon arrival that the Great Magus has accidentally summoned not just one but two Saints: herself and a brown-haired girl.
In the aftermath of participating in World Fantasy Online for almost an entire year, the secluded but affluent 15-year-old Yuna receives a costume of a bear from the game’s administrators. It’s not very attractive, but it has superpowered stats and effects, which increase her character’s than the average player.
Anime is a popular medium for many people, and the number of anime series created each year has increased significantly. Anime has been around for decades, but it’s only in recent years that we’ve seen an increase in shows about superhumans, indestructible heroes, and other such people who can accomplish incredible feats with relative ease.
Tatsumi Oga, the Demon King of Ishiyama High School, is known as a bad guy. The school is known as being lawless. Violence has become a regular occurrence. Teachers are also in a state of fear of being too afraid to speak out against such students in their high schools. Beelzebub, the son of the Demon Lord, is sent to Earth to destroy the human race.
Naruto is one of the most popular and powerful anime characters in the world. However, these 20 characters could totally take him in fight.
Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of the incredibly influential and still ongoing series One Piece, would just squeak out a victory against the blond ninja. While Naruto can create massive energy creatures and attacks that can level a mountain range in an instant, his most devastating techniques require him to borrow the strength of other characters.
He’s a master of the Hokuto Shinken martial art style and can make an opponent’s head explode by disrupting the energy in the body via pressure points. He isn’t able to perform any of the massive energy attacks that Naruto uses regularly, but all he needs is one good hit on the blond ninja to ensure his victory.
Jotaro Kujo, the third main protagonist in the long-running JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure anime and manga, would easily defeat Naruto by utilizing his Star Platinum Stand ability. In JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Stands are manifestations of the soul that allow a person to perform a unique paranormal ability.
Naruto might be physically stronger than Mob and have far more abilities, but there’s nothing in the ninja’s arsenal of weapons and powers that would allow him to combat Mob’s invisible and instantaneous psychic attacks. Granted these two characters are easygoing or passive enough that they’d never exchange blows. Naruto has never fought an enemy even remotely similar to Mob and wouldn’t stand a chance against the young man’s telekinetic onslaught.
He may be one of the strongest characters in his universe, but a good number of other anime operate on completely different power scales or rules from the ones that allow Naruto to excel. In fact, there are dozens of characters that could beat up or defeat Naruto whenever they wanted.
Naruto Uzumaki is easily one of the most well-known anime characters in the entire world. His distinctive appearance, journey from a social outcast to celebrated hero, and almost god-like powers make him a beloved character within the anime fandom and a known entity to more mainstream audiences.
While anime characters can have all kinds of uniquely distinct personalities and characteristics, the one that tends to make an anime character the most memorable is… being a badass.
Yujiro is the father of the protagonist in the Baki anime series. He’s called “The Ogre” because of his brute strength, and a demon-like face forms on his back when he’s dead serious about a fight.
Every Generation of Miracles member was terrifying in their own field and gameplay, but Seijuro Akashi tops them all. With his Emperor’s Eye, he can see ahead of every movement on the court, making his passes, steals, and shots impossible to block.
Omni King Zeno is the ruler of the multiverse, which includes all of its living beings, gods, and angels. This cute little being can annihilate an entire universe in an instant if he chooses to.
Overpowered or "OP" easily becomes a dreaded term when used to describe a protagonist of any story. Why bother exploring the story of a character already at the top of their game, right? Fortunately for anime, some stories that feature OP main characters still shine thanks to ridiculous shenanigans or overwhelming threats that will make any audience root for protagonists.
However, these youngsters hold the fate of the world in their hands. After all, their homeroom teacher Koro Sensei - an extraterrestrial yellow octopus - will destroy the world if the class doesn’t find a way of killing him.

And given he doesn’t have any goals, in particular, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime is a treat to both isekai and slice-of-life lovers.
Despite the divided reception among fans, a viewer can’t deny that Kirigaya Kazuto (Kirito) of Sword Art Online is perhaps the most overpowered video game player, ever. In Sword Art Online, Kirito and thousands of others find themselves trapped in the VR MMO “Sword Art Online.” And when dying in-game somehow kills a player in real life, only Kirito manages to power through the countless threats the game presents him with.
Rhenn is a Manila-based content writer with a love for all things geek and pop culture, and science and technology. He has a BA Journalism degree, and has since then pursued making content about geek culture. Rhenn used to write for a couple of geek and gaming publications, and also served as editor-in-chief for Philippines-based What's A Geek!. He constantly plays video games but also takes the time to try out older titles. If he's not playing video games, he's probably playing TTRPGs.
Much in the same vein as Yugi, Son Goku of Dragon Ball Z doesn’t need much justification for his power as a protagonist. It’s just that, regardless of the threat, Goku will always power through - be it through a new Super Saiyan form or the good old kamehameha.
Anime characters are always trying to one up each other in terms of being overpowered. Thus, this decade's shows are no different.
Gojo is the most powerful jujutsu sorcerer around whose power, "Limitless," grants him, well, seemingly limitless control over all reality around him. Enemies can't even conceptually touch him, and he's able to deliver reality shattering attacks with ease.
Standing at the top of the decade is one of the latest character entries from the series that defined "overpowered." Zeno stands at the top of a food chain that is constantly evolving at extraordinary and ludicrous rates, where there's Saiyans, gods, and angels all co-existing yet still solving conflicts with martial arts bouts.
Jujutsu Kaisen is the new, baby brother of the Shonen Jump family, but he's quickly become the family favorite. A huge part of this is Studio Mappa's stellar animation and direction bolstering the story, but the characters and their incredible powers are certainly carrying their fair share of weight, with none likely carrying more at the moment than Satoru Gojo, aka Kakashi Hatake with really pretty eyes.
Updated May 21st, 2021 By Sean Cubillas: The anime world never rests. For those who do, they're bound to lose their spot to the more hungry, skilled, and powerful of the industry. Since this article was last written, there have been several new entries to the anime world, whether they be new Shonen heroes or isekai protagonists just about to head into their journeys. While personality and character design are certainly good traits, what these characters bring to the average anime convention are some good, old fashioned arguments about power scaling.
8 Akira Fudo - Devilman Crybaby. The original Devilman from the days of anime old was incredibly powerful within his own right; and while Masaaki Yuasa took large liberties with his adaptation of the Japanese icon, he still kept Akira Fudo fairly overpowered.
While personality and character design are certainly good traits, what these characters bring to the average anime convention are some good, old fashioned arguments about power scaling.
The half-demon Inuyasha is a warrior from feudal Japan who can slay any opponent who gets in his way, whether they are human or demon. It might seem unlikely that a ten-year-old girl could go up against any of the strong warriors in anime, but Sakura is a whole lot stronger than she looks. After accidentally releasing a deck of magical cards into the world, Sakura is tasked with recapturing them, and she becomes a sorcerer in her own right.
In exchange for only being able to consume coffee and human flesh, Kaneki gained superhuman strength and the ability to regenerate limbs and even his entire body. This makes him a borderline undefeatable fighter who only grows stronger with each injury he sustains.
Akame's speed and reflexes are so great that her enemies can barely touch her in a fight. In fact, only one person ever actually lands a direct hit in the original manga series. If all of that weren't enough, Akame also carries a magical poisoned blade that kills anyone she strikes.
In fact, in the sequel Clear Card series, Sakura's own magic is so great that she rewrites the cards over the course of the series. She can use the magic inside of her to augment the cards, make them stronger, or create her own. The use of the cards allow her the power of flight, super strength, speed, and more. She is, however, still one of the youngest Magical Girls in anime, ensuring that she lacks the same ruthlessness of some of her older counterparts.
With the increasing popularity of western anime series and the development of new fictional mythologies, there are always more heroes and villains coming to the screen. While some anime characters get their start on the pages of a manga, others come to the screen without audiences knowing anything about their journey.
Baki Hanma is a ridiculously muscular teenage boy with the sole goal of defeating his father, and the world’s strongest living creature, Yujiro Hanma. Baki constantly trains his body by placing himself in dangerous situations.
From the looks, he looks like a super tough teenager with rough hair and appearance. Despite looking all rowdy, he has a rather kind personality. Kogarashi only loses his coolness when someone he cares about is getting hurt. Well, that’s the story with all of the MCs, right? Ain’t nothing new!
Yuliy is tall, slim, blue-eyed, and blue hair with a white extension upfront. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the background, Yuliy is a half-human and half Jaeger, In other words, a beast.
