Ocean Waves is not trying to be anything more than it is, and what it is, is absolutely fine. The story moves very smoothly and the perspective of our young protagonist Taku is set lucid immediately, showing classic hero potential in challenging his school on a decision he finds unfair. He is rational, hard working and emotionally moral.

But even if it wasn't meant to be an example of LGBT cinema, the fact that queer audiences see themselves and their teenage years in Ocean Waves is enough to make it a queer film all on its own.
In its sensitivity and attention to detail, "Ocean Waves" makes itself into something special, and kind of magical, and so proves very much a Ghibli gem. An exceptionally raw and unique Studio Ghibli movie. A film that deserves your attention, and a film that, to me, is criminally underrated.

Howl's Moving Castle (2004) In an attempt to break the spell she winds up the housekeeper of Howl, the local wizard's castle. There the two fall in love in the midst of soul-bonded fires and alternate dimensions. This film is resoundingly queer not in the romantic dynamics but in the domestic life.

Characters smoke and drink, and there's some innuendo and use of insults like "stupid." Not much really happens, but parents and older kids might enjoy a look back on what teen years were like before cell phones and social media, while also getting a glimpse of everyday life in Japan.
Weathering With You is definitely more heartfelt than heartbreaking, although there are several tear-jerking moments throughout the film. The penultimate spot, however, goes to the moment when Hina is taken by the sky as a sacrifice to normalize the weather, and Hodoka wakes up to find her missing.

I'm a HUGE Ghibli fan and you know what this was? Absolute garbage. I actually bought it randomly on DVD because you know, it was Ghibli. There was no character development, or, well the characters were dull, dull storyline. It was so boring, but I kept watching til the end, hoping for a point to it. I actually don't even know what I watched. Nope.
At Kichijōji Station, Tokyo, Taku Morisaki glimpses a familiar woman on the platform opposite boarding a train. Later, her photo falls from a shelf as he exits his apartment before flying to Kōchi Prefecture. Picking it up, he looks at it briefly before leaving. As the aeroplane takes off, he narrates the events that brought her into his life...
