In Free, Haru envisions water, swimming freely through it, like a dolphin, while in Backflip, Shotaro & other characters envision a bird, flying freely through the air. The symbolism in both animes is immaculate!

Backflips are sort of the Backbone of the anime's themes, so to speak. Futaba has no experience at all in Gymnastics and he joins this team of veterans in the sport who all are basically perfect on their own, if only they had more members they could actually win competitions.

Both anime focaus a lot on the sport itself, and have a great main cast. The animation is similar, and the main characters are lovable. Not to mention they both have great female team managers. matchablossom says... both sports anime that focus on a lively protagonist, with a slightly stoic best friend/rival.
