After all, the anime leaves off with Griffin essentially trapping everyone inside a hellish world, where his "friends" are tortured and killed by demons at his behest. And that's when the anime ends, right in the middle of all this turmoil, presumably with the chaos ensuing for all eternity until Griffith gets bored of the torture.
After a long hiatus and three movies to recount the happenings of the first animated series, Berserk came back to television with a new animated series in 2016. The anime is still based on the Berserk manga by Kentaro Miura. It also acts as the direct sequel to the Golden Age Arc trilogy films that was released back in 2012.
Despite sometimes being considered separate series, the two series ultimately had 24 episodes, with each series having 12 episodes, which was ultimately one less than the 1997 series. The same year also saw the release of a light novel adaptation, Berserk: The Flame Dragon Knight, which would be translated into English in 2019.
The concept of skipping straight to where the anime ends to continue the story is a bit sacrilege in this sub :) Anyone who enjoys Berserk will recommend simply starting from the beginning, as there is a lot of crucial foreshadowing and character development that is left out of the adaptation. You will miss a lot if you just continue from there.
Berserk (2017) does end with that panel of Schierke smiling, but that happens in Chapter 249, and the Berserk wiki confirms it.
In the end, only Guts and an unconscious Casca were momentarily spared as Griffith, reborn as the God Hand demon Femto, rapes Casca in front of Guts. Forced to cut off his left forearm to stop his former friend while his right eye is gouged out, Guts manages to escape back to physical world with Casca.

Fushi no Zodd (不死のゾッド) November 11. 1997. When Guts leads his men to raid a castle under Tudor occupation, Judeau reveals the keep to be overseen by a legendary warrior known as Nosferatu Zodd who is said to be immortal.
1998. The Hawks' reclaiming of Doldrey marked the end of the Hundred-Year War between Midland and Tudor, the King holding a ball for the mercenaries in their honor. But the Queen of Midland, Charlotte's stepmother and Julius' secret lover, hatches a scheme with Foss to poison Griffith during the banquet.
He kills all the assailants but one and orders him to tell his master, the Baron, that the Black Swordsman is coming. Guts later finds and kills the Baron and removes a demonic relic called a Beherit from around his neck.
Volume 11 is omitted entirely in the anime to remove the character Wyald, but the events of the volume are instead replaced with a similar (but much shorter) scenario involving human characters. To make the animated series fit within 25 episodes, changes had to be made.
Berserk (manga) Berserk. (manga) Berserk ( Japanese: ベルセルク, Hepburn: Beruseruku) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura. Set in a medieval Europe-inspired dark fantasy world, the story centers on the characters of Guts, a lone mercenary, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary band called the "Band of the Hawk".
As of September 25, 2019, the 40 current volumes have been published. In September 2018, Dark Horse Comics announced a deluxe edition of Berserk, featuring hard covers and larger prints, with the 1st volume (collecting original volumes 1–3) released on February 27, 2019.
While briefly working as an assistant to George Morikawa at 18, Miura had already planned some ideas for Berserk ' s development, having a dark warrior with a gigantic sword illustrated in his portfolio who would be the first conception of Guts. Miura submitted manuscripts to a shōnen manga magazine for about four years before working for Hakusensha. However, he felt that he was not capable enough for it and they were also not interested in publishing science fiction or fantasy works. In 1988, while working with Buronson on a manga titled King of Wolves, Miura published a prototype of Berserk in Hakusensha's Gekkan ComiComi. This 48-page prototype placed 2nd at the 7th ComiComi ' s Manga-School prize. He later submitted his work to a magazine that, at the time, "was on the verge of going under", and he was switched around between several editors before meeting his first editor. The serialization of Berserk began in Hakusensha's Monthly Animal House in 1989. Miura commented that he landed the serial as soon as he made his debut, so he never had the opportunity to receive much criticism from editors.
Two video games based on Berserk have been developed by Yuke's. The first game, Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage (ベルセルク 千年帝国の鷹篇 喪失花の章, Beruseruku Sennen Teikoku No Taka Hen Wasurebana no Shō, "Berserk – Millennium Falcon Arc: Chapter of the Lost Flowers"), was released for the Dreamcast in Japan by ASCII Corporation in late 1999. It was localized in western regions early the following year by Eidos Interactive.
As of May 2021, the Berserk manga had over 50 million copies in circulation, including digital versions, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time. It received the Award for Excellence at the 6th installment of the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2002.

Berserk explores a wide range of themes and topics. Free will and destiny are discussed within the series. Human resilience is a recurring theme, with many characters coming from horrible backgrounds, constantly struggling against an unjust world. Guts struggles with destiny itself and is constantly resisting the pull of predetermination. Griffith also embodies this idea of resilience, by chasing his dream of ruling his own kingdom, despite his lowborn origins, as well the free will, by his own decision to sacrifice the Band of the Hawk in order to achieve his dream.
The third film takes place after Guts has left the Band of the Hawk and his return to help them once they have been declared outlaws, with Griffith imprisoned. While Griffith is shown to have become broken from the torture he's endured, a solar eclipse looms in the background, about to send the characters to another dimension.
The plot of the film revolves around the Band of the Hawk getting involved in the Midland war campaign and venture to the Doldrey fortress.
Technically, this series is sometimes considered the second season of the 2016 series, although it is sometimes considered a separate series. This version adapted the Hawk of the Millennium Empire arc of the manga.

Berserk ends things on a hellish cliffhanger. Perhaps one of the most infamous and most aggravating anime cliffhangers occurs in the 1997 cult classic Berserk. The series follows Guts, a mercenary who begrudgingly joins Griffith, the overly ambitious leader of a mercenary group called the Band of the Hawk. Eventually, the group climbs their way ...
Though the manga ran for 13 years, the anime started and ended before the comics had come to its conclusion, a la Game of Thrones and its infamous final season. So eventually, the series ran out of source material, and with no basis for its finale, the anime concluded at the end of a major plot arc.
The most significant difference between the show and its source material is that the manga reveals the backstory of the enigmatic Shiro, whereas the anime keeps her character a complete mystery.
Rurouni Kenshin is based on a long-running manga of the same name that saw 28 volumes released over five years. The anime ran for a total of three seasons, with 95 episodes by the series' end. As for the plot, Himura Kenshin is the anime's protagonist, a man trying to put his past as an assassin behind him as he defends the weak in Meiji-era Japan.
While the anime has a total of 101 episodes, the series fails to end on a high note.
It was likely for this reason that the series was cast aside after only 12 episodes. While it's unfortunate that the Deadman Wonderland anime was canceled so early, continuing onward with a second season would've been a bit difficult due to the rushed storytelling of the anime adaption.
Highschool of the Dead ended due to a real-life tragedy. Highschool of the Dead is a zombie survival anime that focuses on a group of high school students who struggle against not only the numerous undead but also the rapidly decaying morality among those who've survived the initial outbreak.
