For a studio that is well-known for handling many many anime featuring lots of cute girl, Ikebukuro West Gate Park (IWGP hereafter) is certainly a surprising line-up for studio Doga Kobo and for that reason alone I think it was interesting to keep an eye for this series.

Plus, the last episode of the anime's debut season teased the second season as someone approached Makoto for another case before the curtains fell.

IWGP is a crime story mixed with a coming-of-age drama for young adults, which makes it a breath of fresh air for Fumihiko Shimo, a series composer/screenwriter primarily known for penning school life anime and visual novel adaptations.

The first volume of IWGP – a short story collection set in the seedy underworld of Ikebukuro – was actually Ishida’s debut novel. The book garnered praise and even netted Ishida the 36th All Yomimono New Mystery Writer's Prize.
Just to name a few, Shimo’s pre- IWGP work includes beloved classics such as Clannad and The Disappearance Of Haruhi Suzumiya, the work-out anime How Heavy Are The Dumbbells You Lift?, long-running sports anime Prince Of Tennis, and of course, some episodes of Hamtaro. Hamsters aside, his most well-known work comes from some episodes of the original Higurashi When They Cry and its OVA series Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kira.
