Enjoyment: Simply put, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is the perfect anime for anyone that enjoys to really interact, predict and think with the storyline and it's characters. An unbelievable horror anime, and a decent comedy too.
Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (“When the Cicadas Cry”) is one of the best horror anime of all time. Instead of cheap jump scares, Higurashi inspires terror in its brilliant plot and abrupt shifts in tone and characters. The story follows Keiichi, a young boy who moves to the remote town of Hinamizawa.
Four years ago, during the dam incident, young police investigator Mamoru Akasaka comes to Hinamizawa to find leads to a child kidnapping. After hearing an enigmatic warning from a younger Rika, Mamoru becomes suspicious of some of the townsfolk.
Keiichi's despair reaches its peak. After being captured and sedated, he wakes up restrained by Mion and Rena, and they attempt to inject him with a mysterious drug. Keiichi murders them before taking his own life by clawing his throat.
Keiichi's mentality is shaken when his friends tells him that he was actually at the Watanagashi Festival with them and Satoko still bemoans her uncle's abuse, despite being sure about having him dead. His confusion grows when he tries to unsuccessfully find the truth.
Keiichi and Rena suspect that Mion might be related to Rika and Satoko's disappearance, and confront her at her house. There, he learns from her about the burden she carries as the heir of the Sonozaki family, and tries to dissuade her to surrender herself without success.
At the Furude Shrine, Keiichi discovers Rika's disemboweled body , and Satoko believes that Keiichi is the culprit and flees. After fruitlessly trying to convince her that he is not the murderer, disaster strikes the town of Hinamizawa.
However, in the following day, Keiichi is interrogated by chief police officer, Oishi, about a crime that occurred at the night of the festival, and he starts fearing the villagers might be involved in this and other similar incidents, like Oishi suspects.
Keiichi Maebara, a student who recently moved into the village of Hinamizawa, is invited by his new friends at school to join their club. But while searching for treasure at a garbage dump with Rena Ryugu, he discovers the village is not as peaceful as it seems.

When he decides to dig deeper and learn more about the strange phenomena, Keiichi is shocked to realize that those horrible accidents have been normalized. Furthermore, whenever he tries to discuss the matter with his new friends, they dismiss the topic without ever giving him the answers that he desperately needs.
At his new school, he befriends Satoko Houjou, Rika Furude, Mion Sonozaki, and Rena Ryuuguu, all of whom appear to have Keiichi’s best interests in their mind.
Hulu subscribers will have to find other alternatives, as ‘Higurashi When They Cry’ is not part of the platform’s current offerings. However, in case you want to watch another anime that has induces similar fear and paranoia, then you can stream ‘ Danganronpa: The Animation.’.
Maebara Keiichi, an ordinary high-school boy, has transferred to a new school in Hinamizawa, a small rural village. At the outset everything seems peaceful and Keiichi becomes friends with a nice group of schoolgirls with whom he spends many idle summer afternoons.
StoryCute girl with a cleaver; that carries a nice little ring to it, does it not? While not fully accurate, it rather clearly depicts Higurashi no Naku Koro ni's brooding mixture of drama and horror.
So, I just finished this show! It was ok, I suppose, but I kinda lost interest in it during the second half... and then the final episodes drop some interesting info about what's going on, which will probably be explained in S2, but I'm not sure if I'll ever be in the mood to watch S2.
This list will include anime with a more "serious" tone and at least a decent plot lol. If you have something that belongs on the list, write it in the comment section and if I have seen it and I agree with adding it (I only add anime I've seen on all my lists.). If I haven't seen it, I watch it. Thanks :)
