The news about the upcoming anime first came to light in December 2020 as the announcement was made through the second 2021 issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. It was revealed that MAPPA, famous for bringing projects like Z ombie Land Saga, Dorohedoro, Jujutsu Kaisen, and the final season of Attack on Titan , will helm Chainsaw Man.
While MAPPA is keeping the voice cast under wraps as of now, with the trailer made up of ominous music and creepy chainsaw sounds. However, a team of amazing anime veterans behind the camera has been confirmed to be working on the CSM production. Here is the list.
The story revolves around Denji, a young guy who is facing a financial crunch. His father owed a lot of debt to the Yakuza, an organised crime syndicate but passed away before he could repay it. The devils in Denji's world exist both in the mortal and the hellish world.
Struggling to pay back his father's debt, Denji is forced to work for the Yakuza as a Demon Hunter. With his demon pet Pochita, Denji serves the gang to the best of his abilities until they decide that he has outlived his usefulness and murdered him.
Admittedly, the initial premise of CSM does sound wacky. But while the manga isn't a masterpiece, it's surprisingly good. The characters are well written, with their own motives and stories, and they don't fall into the cliche archetypes of a shounen series. The plot is quick and engaging, and there's not a single chapter wasted on fillers.
Given the nature of the anime, be prepared for a lot of gore and uncensored mutilation. The action sequences in the manga are phenomenal, so expect some heart-stopping fight scenes in the anime as well. And though the artwork looks bright and colorful, keep in mind that the show will be dealing with darker, more mature themes.
MAPPA has its best staff working on this project. Ryuu Nakayama and Keisuke Seshita, who previously directed and animated Jujutsu Kaisen, are also working on CSM. Tatsuya Yoshihara, the action director of Black Clover, and other famous names behind Vinland Saga and Dorohedoro are working together to bring this anime to life.
There's no official confirmation from MAPPA yet. Still, based on previous release patterns, Chainsaw Man can be expected to release with the 2021 Fall/Winter season lineup, with a set of 24-26 episodes.
There's no official news on where Chainsaw Man will make its western debut, but based on Jjk's release, it's not hard to speculate that MAPPA will release the anime on both Crunchyroll and Netflix almost immediately.
The Chainsaw Man anime is confirmed as having a 2021 release date, however at the time of writing an exact release date hasn't been announced. However it looks like the Chainsaw Man anime could premiere in fall / autumn.
Jujutsu Kaisen - which is another MAPPA production - was announced in November 2019 with a release date in October 2020. If there's a similar turnaround with Chainsaw Man, which was announced in December 2020, then we could see the anime drop in November or maybe even October.
MAPPA hasn't announced how many episodes the Chainsaw Man anime will run for, but fans have speculated that 24 episodes should be enough to cover Part 1. An announcement also hasn't been made on which streaming service you'll be able to watch Chainsaw Man on.
Chainsaw Man is one of the biggest animes of 2021. An adaptation of the hit Shonen Jump series was announced last December, which is when Part 1 of the dark series created by Tatsuki Fujimoto wrapped up.
The first trailer was released in June 2021 as part of the MAPPA Stage 10th Anniversary, and teases some gorgeous animation and some surprisingly idyllic scenes before things get very, very violent…
However, we do know that there is an impressive team of anime veterans behind the camera, including director Ryu Nakamura (Jujutsu Kaisen), scriptwriter Hiroshi Seko (Attack on Titan) and action director Tatsuya Yoshihara (Black Clover).
