Your Name is a sad movie. It has a happy ending and there are funny moments, but it's sad. It's heartbreaking.
The 2006 film The Girl Who Leapt Through Time has quite a few similarities with Your Name, but both movies also stand on their own as amazing films.
Released in 2016, Your Name has now been out for over three years. It has broken box-office records for domestic Japanese films, and also anime films abroad. Many consider it to be one of the best anime movies of all time, and Makoto Shinkai's greatest body of work.
While the comet from Your Name wasn't inspired by a real-world meteor strike, it was inspired by the devastating events of the Great Eastern Earthquake that hit Japan in 2011.
Grave of the Fireflies is one of the most heartbreaking movies fans will ever see. Part of the confusion people have with Your Name is it's structure. Because Mitsuha exists three years behind Taki, and because the movie randomly jumps between those time periods, the story doesn't flow in chronological order. Many times it can feel like Your Name is purposely leaving out information to trip you up.
Based on the manga written & illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is the most successful Japanese movie in history. It holds all the box-office records to its name as it collected more than $500 million worldwide becoming the highest-grossing anime movie of 2020.
Mitsuha is the daughter of the mayor of a small mountain town. She's a straightforward high school girl who lives with her sister and her grandmother and has no qualms about letting it be known that she's uninterested in Shinto rituals or helping her father's electoral campaign.
The red braided cord that Mitsuha wears represents the invisible red string of fate that is said to connect someone to their fated person, according to Japanese tradition.

Your Name takes place in two different parts of Japan. Taki is based in Tokyo, a city that Mitsuha desperately wants to run off to, and Mitsuha is based in a rural Japanese village in the Hida region. The movie hops between both areas as the two explore their surroundings.
What’s the basic premise of Your Name? Your Name follows two characters, a teenage boy named Taki Tachibana and a teenage girl named Mitsuha Miyamizu. One night, after making a wish for a different life, Taki and Mitsuha wake up in each other’s bodies.
Your Name won three awards from the Japanese Academy, including the award for Most Popular Film. It won the award for Best Animation from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and Makoto Shinkai won Best Director at the Tokyo Anime Awards. Other awards were handed out for visual categories.
This is perhaps the most important question. Funimation is releasing it for one day only in the United States and Canada on April 7. To see a full list of participating theaters and purchase tickets, head over to Funimation’s site.
Ando worked on the character designs for Spirited Away , Paprika and Paranoia Agent, as well as the animations for many other Ghibli movies. With this kind of resume behind him, it's no wonder he was brought on to lead the animation team for Your Name.
10 Animation Director Worked Heavily With Hayao Miyazaki In The Past. Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, and Makoto Shinkai are some of the biggest names in anime films right now. The lastest Makoto Shinkai film isn't the only one connected to Your Name . The Garden of Words, released in 2013, focuses on Takao Akizuki , an aspiring shoemaker, and Yukari Yukino, a teacher who struggles with her students bullying her. Both of the leads make an appearance in Your Name, as Yukari is the Classical Japanese teacher at Mitsuha's school, Ms. Yuki, and her partner, Takao, makes a silent appearance near the end of the film among a crowd of people.
Although Mitsuha's family may have no naming connections to an English speaker, their Japanese meanings are all connected to one another. Mitsuha's grandmother, Hitoha, means "one leaf" in her native tongue, and begins a naming trait that follows down the female side of her family. Mitsuha's mother, Futaba, is "two leaves," Mitsuha herself is "three leaves," and her little sister, Yotsuha, is "four leaves." We can only assume that if Mitsuha had a daughter or niece, they would be named "five leaves."
The comet that looms over much of the film, Tiamat, is named after the goddess of the ocean. Although much of her theology doesn't relate to the nature of the comet, there is one aspect that is connected to the film in a rather grim way.

Toho. Building a life with someone means inviting them into your home, into your life, and then building a new home and life with them. So when she hands that thread to Taki later in the movie, she’s not just creating a spiritual link—she’s offering half of herself to someone she shares a bond with.
Inside the shrine is a mural of Musubi: the Comet. The comet is 100% the source of this phenomenon. There have been not one, not two, but at least 3 impacts there.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is an earlier work from Mamoru Hosoda, famous for his directorial role in the original Digimon movie. The story follows a girl who suddenly gains the ability to travel and quite literally leap through time.
5 Centimeters Per Second was, by far, Shinkai's best-regarded work prior to the release of Your Name, and it deserves that accolade. Many of Shinkai's trademark stylistic elements are present here: a deep sense of longing inspired by the insurmountable gap between lovers, and, of course, beautiful background work.
As the most successful work from one of anime's most prominent female directors, Naoko Yamada, A Silent Voice has an impressive reputation on its own terms. However, comparisons to Your Name were inevitable on account of the proximity of the two films' debuts, and the occasionally similar thematic content found in both.
The Garden of Words is an interesting midpoint in Shinkai's filmography, sitting significantly between Five Centimeters Per Second and Your Name.
Patema Inverted is a great but underrated anime movie that most probably haven't heard of from director Yasuhiro Yoshiura, and also one that shares a number of striking similarities with Your Name. Both are youth love stories with supernatural elements, and both include a handful of rather surprising twists to keep the plot moving along.
Supernatural coming-of-age stories are a frequent theme of Shinkai's, which often gets him compared to Wolf Children director Mamoru Hosoda, who makes stories involving similar subject matter.
Whisper of the Heart is one of a handful of underrated titles from the legendary Studio Ghibli, and it's also one of the studio's most overtly romantic films. Although romantic subplots are found in many of the studio's offerings, Whisper of the Heart puts its love story at the forefront.
