Shoujo and shonen are both Japanese terms commonly used as categories for entertainment media. Shoujo refers to young girls, often “magical girls” like Sailor Moon, and shonen respectively means young boys from about 12-18 years old. Many of the most popular anime in the world fall into either of these two categories.
While taking influence from American superhero comics, Miraculous's ties to Japanese animation make a strong case for it being defined as anime.
The genre brings people together for an easy watch, where the content of the film isn't exactly mindless, but cannot be viewed as cerebral. Being so easy to watch, and being able to apply to a variety of psychographics, make romantic comedies such an agreeable genre in movies.
It's cathartic. That's what romantic comedies are for, after all: They allow us to shamelessly indulge in the hope and beauty of love. But more often than not, the love depicted in rom-coms isn't realistic.
This week's romantic comedy is the memorable film The Notebook. This iconic 2004 film is adapted from the 1996 novel by Nicholas Sparks. It holds the theme that behind every great love is a great story. The movie takes place in the 1940s when a rich city girl falls in love with a poor country boy.
One day, however, he has an unexpected meeting with the cutest girl in school that makes him want to disappear without a trace! This girl, Karen Tendou, is an exemplary student who is proclaimed to be the school’s idol.
The rom com anime story could seem generic, boy meets girl, he falls for her, they start a romance, well is nothing like that, is about this boy Haru Yoshida who doesn’t like to go to school because he can’t make friends which prompts to one of his classmate, namely, Shizuku to be sent the homework to him.
The rom com anime story isn’t the most original story ever , relying on the interaction of the seven members of the Special A (SA from now on) class and not involving many other characters.
Kimi ni Todoke. The rom com anime story is simple and relishes in its simplicity. There are no contrived melodramatic shticks , or unnecessary drama to test one’s patience, or any other kind of forced devices creators use to plod the plot along. This series has a focus and sticks to it.
21. One Week Friends. Isshuukan Friends is about a girl named Fuijimiya Kaori who has post traumatic stress disorder, and her memories reset every Monday. One day, she meets a boy named Hase Yuuki who wants to be her friend, and the story starts from there.
The rom com anime story was quite shallow at first which was just showing the different themes of the club and how they entertained the guests but when you continue with the later part of the series, you’ll realize that behind all the smiles of the characters, there is a bitter past. The flow of the story is also good.
14. Golden Time (2013-14) Based on the light novel by the same name, ‘Golden Time’ is a positive anime featuring good-looking young people doing young people things.

Anime, one of the most popular kind of art nowadays, is not untouched from the magic of romcoms. When it comes to romantic comedies, Japan has a knack for producing contents with a wide range of themes and emotional contrasts. We have curated a list if you want to indulge in some really good rom-com anime of past few years.
Nino (a self-proclaimed Venusian) wants to experience love and Ko owes her a debt so he decides to aid her and, while aiding her, he must a wide array of weird, hilarious characters who make up the residents of the Arakawa River and bridge. Shaft. Recommended Videos. Powered by AnyClip.
One of the older animes on this list, that has spawned a few live action dramas in various languages (my fav is Japanese version) this series follows our lead heroine, Tsukushi Makino, in this reverse harem series as she navigates a rich, elite school as a poor student.
While many of these animes don’t have realistic scenes (i.e. Koizumi floating as a ghost) we can all relate to having a complex about our appearance, and the pain and joys of first love.
Koizumi Risa is entering high school and hoping to find a boyfriend, but she’s so tall and isn’t seen as a girl. Otani is short and rarely seen as a boy. Together, they are considered a comedy duo by the school as they bicker and create scenes. They decide to compete to find a partner and hilarity and hijinks ensue.
Horimiya was a new anime for the Spring 2021 season and was released via Funimation, simultaneously dropping dubbed and subbed episodes. It immediately became a favorite among romance fans because of its realistic depiction of high school relationships and the likable characters (not to mention the initial punk and pierced appearance of Miyamura).
Much like Horimiya, Haganai is another High School story. Haganai, however, follows Kodaka Hasegawa, a transfer student who can’t seem to make friends. Shockingly enough, this turns into the main plot. The Neighbors Club is then created by Kodaka and Yozora Mikazuki, a girl whose only friend is the air.
Our first harem anime is The Quintessential Quintuplets which follows the Nakano sisters as they get tutored by top student Futaro Uesugi. While the quintuplets come from a rich and privileged family, Futaro is the exact opposite; his mother has passed away, he has no friends, and his family is in debt, which he now has to pay off.
In a world of Gods, Demons and humans, Shuffle! follows a group of girls who are all in love with Rin Tsuchimi. Two of the girls, Sia and Nerine, are the princesses of the Gods and Demons (respectively) who want to marry Rin after both having encounters with him as children.
Perhaps one of the best examples of a romantic comedy is Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War, which just finished airing its second season. Love Is War follows Miyuki Shirogane, the school’s president, and Kaguya Shinomiya, the vice-president, as they navigate their secret feelings for each other.
There are many genres Sailor Moon could fit into, and with it being a classic anime and many peoples’ first, it’s more than earned the title of iconic. It also happens to be a rom-com, and we see that in each episode through each character’s relationships.
Kamisama Kiss follows Nanami Momozono and Tomoe, the new Earth God and her familiar (respectively), as they navigate their relationship as well as Nanami’s newfound God status. What’s interesting though, is Nanami’s feelings are admitted early on, where as for all the audience knows, Tomoe has no interest in her.
The most magical series on this list is Venus to Mamoru, which isn't remembered much despite its premise sounding like the recipe for a mega-hit. The main character is the eponymous Mamoru, who through sheer intellect is able to get into a prestigious magical school based around the power of Beatrice.
Wolf Girl and Black Prince was initially a manga by Ayuko Hatta, running from 2011 to 2016 and being collected into 16 volumes. The plot follows a young girl named Erika who feels that she must pretend to have a boyfriend in order to fit in with a clique. Her pretend boyfriend just so happens to be Kyoya, the most popular guy at school.
Based on a series of light novels , Love, Chunbiyo & Other Delusions features a romance with a rather interesting high school student. Protagonist Yuta Togashi hopes to enter high school on the right foot, discarding his grandiose and embarrassing middle school persona.
Likely the most "well-known" anime on this list is Kanon from Toei Animation and Kyoto Animation. Based on a visual novel series from Key, the series is still relatively obscure compared to the more well-known Clannad, although it does have some similar beats.
One of the best parts of a rom-com is always the comedy, and Monthly Girls' Nokazi-kun is nothing short of comedic. It begins with female lead Chiyo Sakura, determined to confess her feelings to her crush, Umetaro Nozaki. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned, as Nozaki mistakes her for a passionate fangirl.
Sawako Kuronuma is a shy girl with no friends at the beginning of Kimi ni Todoke. Her classmates all avoid her, fearing her for her appearance. On her quest to overcome her shyness and find friends, she becomes close to Shouta Kazehaya, the most popular boy in class.
Lovely Complex follows a pair of misfits on their quest for true love. Risa Koizumi and Atsushi Ootani struggle to fit in and find romance due to their abnormal heights. Risa is much taller than the average girl, while Atsushi is shorter than the average guy.
This series is different than most rom-coms out there. Comprised of 3-minute episodes, Ojisan and Marshmallow isn't a typical high school romance. The story focuses on Habahiro Hige, an older man working an office job with a passion for Tabekko Marshmallows.
Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove it brings science and romance together in a wonderfully comical way. It deals with the concept of love and how such a mysterious feeling comes to be. The story follows two scientists, Ayame Himuro and Shinya Yukimaru, who are both inexperienced in the dealings of love.
While most rom-coms feature a high school romance, Teasing Master Takagi-san gives viewers a look at a blossoming young love. The story follows middle-schooler Nishikata, who finds himself the target of his classmate's teasings. Every day, no matter the situation, she finds a way to put him into the most embarrassing situations.
Quickly becoming a favorite among rom-com fans, Kaguya-sama: Love is War is a breath of fresh air for the genre. It has all the makings of a typical rom-com series but puts an interesting spin on it. Miyuki Shirogane and Kaguya Shinomiya work together in the student council and are admired by everyone at Shuchiin Academy as the perfect couple.
