The 97 Berserk anime is great. After that go read the manga, from beginning on. 97 is good overall but if you want peak Beserk then read the manga. Not the 2016 version. If you can find the 97 version watch that, if not then read the manga. Depends. How much do you make an hour? 1997 anime of Beserk is excellent.
Berserk manga by Kentaro Miura is one of the best saga I have ever seen, great script, great dialogues, great characters and all what mankind have to offer : from best to worst. But Berserk manga is actually very dark, very harsh, violent, and humanity got an ugly side, a real ugly one. This movie does a great job to introduce the Golden Age Arc.
Why Should You Not Watch It?
There’s only one order in which the Berserk movies should be watched and it’s the following:
The anime series just cover about 120 chapters out of 333 chapters of the original manga! and the anime is with less details. The manga is still ongoing, it is not finished and has been postponed for some years cause the writer was busy with another manga. I don't know if he starts writing berserk again or not!
The first anime series (1997) covers Black Swordsman arc (volume 1-3) until just before the end of Golden Age arc (volume 3- 13 ). However, it includes original episodes and some modifications to the original story. (Source: Yahoo!

On March 17, 2017, IGN released a clip of the Berserk English dub and was announced that the series will be distributed by Funimation, but the series was dubbed by Bang Zoom! Entertainment. This marks the first time NYAV Post had no involvement in dubbing Berserk media since Sword of the Berserk.
Anime News Network contributor Jacob Hope Chapman was critical of the show's production quality in his review of episodes 1–3, stating that " Berserk 2016 is an abominably ugly and almost forcefully unpleasant realization of our dreams, with cut-rate CGI, questionable music choices, and disorienting camera work".
The third film takes place after Guts has left the Band of the Hawk and his return to help them once they have been declared outlaws, with Griffith imprisoned. While Griffith is shown to have become broken from the torture he's endured, a solar eclipse looms in the background, about to send the characters to another dimension.
The plot of the film revolves around the Band of the Hawk getting involved in the Midland war campaign and venture to the Doldrey fortress.
Technically, this series is sometimes considered the second season of the 2016 series, although it is sometimes considered a separate series. This version adapted the Hawk of the Millennium Empire arc of the manga.

Berserk: Golden Age Arc III - The Advent. The animations style in these movies is a mix of traditional digital animation and CGI. Although certain scenes look polished and well crafted, there are many that feel rushed and have janky 3d animation.
Berserk: The Ultimate Watch Order Guide. Berserk is a legendary manga that has spanned over 30 years and 40 collected volumes and is still going strong to this day (despite all the hiatuses). Considered by many to be the greatest manga ever made, it’s definitely series creator, Kintarou Miura’s magnum opus.
This is the first (and possibly the best) anime adaptation of the original series. It’s only 25 episodes and quite easy to skim through. Although the director of the anime took a minimalistic approach in retelling the story, it works surprisingly well.
Many great scenes are skipped over in this adaptation, however, there are some extras here, which were not present in the 1997 anime. Also, there’s less censorship in the movies of both gore and sexual scenes.
The story of Berserk perfectly balances action, drama, philosophy, and superb character development, but be advised it’s not for the faint of heart. If you’re thinking of jumping into the series, I would highly recommend you start with the manga as that is the definitive way of consuming this amazing story.
