Of course, the manga is also nearing the debut of chapter 1,000... but it seems the big release will not drop in 2020. The update comes after several noted One Piece fan-pages like SoulstormOP reported an impending break for the manga.
That means chapter 1,000 would be slated for a January 3 debut which pushes the release to 2021. This report hasn't been made official just yet, but fans are willing to buy into the report. After all, One Piece has not taken hardly any breaks in the past few weeks.

One Piece avoid long filler arcs by maintaining a roughly 40 chapter gap between what is currently released in the manga and what the anime is currently adapting. So, One Piece Episode 1000 will not cover One Piece chapter 1000, but roughly rather chapters 988-990.

Most people can read manga a lot faster than they can watch anime (even if you pull the classic trick of watching at 1.5 speed with the subtitles on), so you'll probably get through the series a lot faster if you choose to read. You'll also skip the filler episodes, some of which are better than others.
