Its all a big gamble in the end. So yeah, in my general opinion they are worth watching but they aren't required in most cases so if you skip them, that is completely fine also. It depends. OVA are actually like mini episodes to the next season.
The OVA's aren't technically canon and don't add much to the series, but are fun and interesting and I'd definitely recommend them.
