Log Horizon. This is an anime that often gets compared with SAO. In fact, you will see tons of discussions comparing Sword Art Online and Log Horizon all over the Internet. The main similarity is that both take place inside a MMORPG.
There is also a paid Android game titled SAO -Log Out- that users can download and play with characters from the series and obtain wallpapers from it. A virtual reality massive multiplayer online game was in development by Kadokawa and IBM Japan, but was only a demo and will not be released as a full game.
An anime adaptation of Sword Art Online was announced at Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival 2011, along with Reki Kawahara's other light novel series, Accel World. The anime is produced by Aniplex and Genco, animated by A-1 Pictures and directed by Tomohiko Ito with music by Yuki Kajiura.
This series ranks up there with the likes of Naruto and One Piece, and SAO fans will find plenty to like about it. Most of the characters wield swords (known as zanpakuto), and some of these sword slingers are the stuff of legend.

'Sword Art Online': Japanese Anime to Be Adapted for TV – The Hollywood Reporter.
Is Sword Art Online finished? Nope. It isn't. After Alicization there is going to be another arc called the Unital Ring.
Although the positive effects of relationships are focused on for many of the series' interactions, that doesn't mean it shies away from twisted ones. From the start, Sword Art Online is practically all about the relationships laced throughout, be them romantic, familial or simply that of unbreakable friendship.
SAO is technically not classified as a "harem anime," though sadly it does retain a lot of similarities to that genre. Tons of girls have swarmed around Kirito, usually from being saved by him or impressed by his "skills," who all adore him. Sadly for them, he's only interested in Asuna.
Definitely not for kids/younger teens.
Is It Worth Watching? Sword Art Online is blessed with some beautiful animation and contains some eye-catching action scenes. The voice acting for the main characters Asuna and Kirito has been impeccable and the sound quality overall is perfect.

Using the cover of the smoke, the pink devil easily dispatched player after player without being seen, while Fukaziroh extended the duration of the smokescreen by firing more grenades.
On December 28, 2025; Kirigaya Suguha showed her cousin, Kirigaya Kazuto a news article about the legendary item, the «Holy Sword Excalibur», being discovered in ALfheim Online. Without delay, he called Asuna, Klein, Lisbeth, Silica and Sinon to challenge the dungeon in the sky of Jötunheimr.

The Sword Art Online anime is an anime adaptation of the original Sword Art Online light novel series, written by Kawahara Reki. The anime is produced by A-1 Pictures, with the direction of Itou Tomohiko (season 1, Extra Edition, season 2, Ordinal Scale) and Ono Manabe (season 3). The first season began airing on July 7, 2012 in Japan, ...
The year is 2022, and gamers have lined up on launch day for Sword Art Online, a hotly-anticipated MMORPG that lets players connect to an immersive virtual reality world with special helmets called Nerve Gear.
The storyline is based on the light novel series "Sword Art Online" originally intended as an entry into a short story competition. The original novel was twice as long as allowed for the contest but Reki couldn't bear taking anything out of the story leading to it being self published.
In the year 2022, virtual reality has progressed by leaps and bounds, and a massive online role-playing game called Sword Art Online (SAO) is launched. With the aid of "NerveGear" technology, players can control their avatars within the game using nothing but their own thoughts.

A new augmented reality device called the Augma is all the rage, with a combat-based game called Ordinal Scale becoming the first ARMMORPG. Kirito shows little interest in AR until Asuna and the others tell him that boss monsters from the original Sword Art Online game have started appearing.
Season 1: Sword Art Online (Aincrad/Fairy Dance) The first season that started it all is split into two arcs: the "Aincrad" Arc and the "Fairy Dance" Arc. "Aincrad" introduces protagonist Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya, who in November 2022 is trapped, along with 10,000 other players, within the VR world of Sword Art Online.
It can be confusing, but the SAO anime's chronology does fit in a proper order — though Alternative can be viewed independently —even though many of the stories begin very shortly after their preceding arcs. Seems Kirito and friends get even shorter spans of peace and quiet than the Dragon Ball cast.
Back in the main timeline, the Ordinal Scale film takes place a few weeks after the end of the "Mother's Rosario" Arc. It also has the distinction of being an anime-exclusive story, not appearing in author Kawahara's light novels.
SAO Alternative is a separate series with a whole different cast of characters. Based on the light novels by Keiichi Sigsawa, the only similarity to the main series is that it takes place in the already-established world of Gun Gale Online.
Back in ALO, she hears of an expert sword fighter named Zekken who is undefeated in one-on-one battles, including a victory over Kirito. Asuna and Zekken, real name Yuuki, become fast friends and Asuna joins her guild for a time.
The mysteries compound when the game's second-ranked player, Eiji, purposely injures Klein and his guild, leaving them in the hospital. Multiple SAO survivors who interact with Eiji, including Asuna, begin to lose the memories of their time in SAO.
Though the winner is granted access to exclusive knowledge, Raishin seeks to restore the good name of the Akabane Clan...and gain revenge on those who took his clan out.
If that weren't enough to win over SAO fans, Bleach has soft isekai themes, such as when the hero Ichigo takes a portal to the Japanese-inspired Soul Society (the afterlife), Later, he also journeys to Hueco Mundo, a supernatural desert of monsters.
Hero Tanjiro Kamado is on a quest to restore his demon sister 's humanity, and he'll have to learn the way of the sword and take on the deadliest demons out there. He's a quick learner, and he soon forms a whole team of sword-slinging heroes.
Much like Sword Art Online, not long after entering an alternate world, Ernesti (or Eru, as he’s called by friends) becomes one of the most important people in his country thanks to his inventing skills and piloting prowess, even eventually getting to create his own Knight company where he employs his friends.
The King’s Avatar is essentially Sword Art Online minus the whole protagonist stuck in an alternate world bit. Instead, lead character Ye Xiu is a competitive eSports player for the mega-popular video game Glory. After tiring of the politics of the shady eSports world, Ye Xiu abandons that life and his old character and starts from scratch ...
Like Bleach, Demon Slayer is all about sword and monsters. This series, set around the turn of the 20th century, depicts a Japan torn between its traditional past and the Western-style future, with demons lurking in the shadows all the while.
Here, the lead is Naofumi Iwatani, who can only use shields in combat. So he's going to need a team to back him up.
The plots take different directions. If you want something with heavy emphasis on action scenes, then give this one a shot. Not to mention, the main character is more relatable since he loses everything at the beginning and works his way back to the top.
This anime is similar to Sword Art Online in the sense that both take place in a tower-like setting, in which the characters need to get to a certain floor before being able to move on to the next. The ultimate goal, of course, is to reach the last floor and defeat the final boss. Tower of Druaga also features many RPG elements such as hunting for rare items, forming parties, and leveling up.
Mochizuki Touya shares many similarities with Kirito. After getting struck by lightning, he finds himself transported to another world where he possesses superpowers and a smartphone. Touya is overpowered as well, and he likes to use his skills to help others. There are plenty of fight sequences in which he fights alongside female characters.
1. Overlord. Overlord now ranks as one of the most popular anime series of all time—and for good reason! This isn't your ordinary "player stuck in an online game" show. Overlord makes things interesting by telling a story of how it would be like if it's a villain that ends up getting stuck in the game.
Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. Kirito being too overpowered is one of the primary criticisms about Sword Art Online. Many fans also dislike the harem elements, which could prove to be a bit too much at certain points. These two issues aren't present in Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash.
No Game No Life. No Game No Life is a relatively new anime series that was released on April 9, 2014. Online anime communities are littered with discussions comparing SAO and No Game No Life —again because both anime have the same setting.
Naofumi Iwatani isn't as strong as Kirito at first, but he soon forms a party with mostly female characters to help him complete various objectives.
