You better pray you die quickly, or this could be painful. ~ Guts to a group of soldiers. Guts, famously known as the The Black Swordsman, is the main protagonist of the manga series and anime adaptions Berserk.
For English, Marc Diraison voiced him in the 1997 anime and movies; Kaiji Tang voiced him in the 2016 anime; and Michael Bell voiced him in Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage.
Now, with the latest chapters of Berserk hinting at an endgame, Guts' suffering might finally have an expiration date. That's good news for the fictional character as he's probably held the record of the most tortured anime protagonist since 1989.

His hair turned white due to the stress of the armor on his body. That seems like such a simple explanation though. And if that were the case, Guts would have white hair due to stress from many things other than his first 2 minutes inside the armor.

Kentaro Miura's Berserk is an emotional anime classic. Anime fans all over the world were heartbroken at the news that the great mangaka Kentaro Miura had passed away.
After the events of the Eclipse, during which he loses his left forearm and right eye, Guts seeks revenge on Griffith, who is now Femto. In the process, he is reunited with Casca after a separation of two years. Following the Incarnation Ceremony at Albion, Guts travels with a new group of companions.
Grunbeld. Voiced by: Tesshō Genda ( Sword of the Berserk ), Kiyoyuki Yanada (2016 anime) Grunbeld, known in Japan as Gurunberd (グルンベルド, Gurunberudo), is a giant red-haired apostle of exceeding strength in dragon-like scale plate armor and armed with a warhammer and a shield containing a hidden cannon.
After meeting Griffith, Guts is defeated in battle by Griffith and is forced to join the Band of the Hawk. Guts has also appeared in every Berserk video game. Guts is a Byronic hero who is born as one who may be able to struggle against causality, but who is unable to maintain it indefinitely.
Main antagonists of the series, a group of powerful entities who manipulate the world of Berserk, messengers of the Idea of Evil (an ancient being spawned from humanity's collective desire for a great evil on which they can blame their misfortune) who appear before those who activated a Behelit. Like the Apostles, all members of the God Hand (ゴッドハンド, Goddo Hando) were once humans who were chosen by the Idea of Evil through Crimson Behelits to serve its purpose of giving a reason for humanity's suffering. In a two hundred and sixteen-year cycle, a ritual known as the Eclipse occurs with a new member recruited, as was the case with Griffith, with a mass sacrificial offering. Unlike the Apostles who serve them, the members of the God Hand can not take a true corporeal form in the mortal plane and are forced to use rudimentary bodies for brief moments. But this can be remedied through an Incarnation Ceremony that occurs once in a millennium with the one who invoked it offering his body as a permanent vessel for a God Hand member to manifest, after offering a large amount of lives. When Griffith is successfully reconstituted in the aftermath of Albion's destruction, the rest of the God Hand were scattered across the Astral Plane. In chapter 306, the rest of the God Hand incarnate in the aftermath of Griffith using Ganishka's defeat to remove the barriers between the mortal and astral planes.
Berserker armour: Guts wears an dwarven-crafted cursed armor. Its helm takes a canine-looking form. It gives Guts night vision and increases Guts pain tolerance, making him completely resilient. It also makes Guts able to dodge large water spouts and push the mast of a massive ship that is about to fall on him. Guts can still use his cannon arm and the armour is able to surpass his subconscious limit but costs his very own life. This armour can also reinforce his limbs when damaged and will revert them back to where they were when broken backwards. This armour cost his sanity and won't stop fighting until the last blood is shed. The only way to make him come to his senses whilst wearing it is with telepathy or astral projection.
His birth from a hanged woman was a bad omen and the superstitious members wanted to kill him and move on. He was adopted by Shisu, a woman close to the group leader, Gambino.
Shisu’s death made Gambino even angrier and meaner than before, mostly towards Guts because he believes that Guts is cursed, and the only reason he doesn’t kill him is because Shisu begged him to take care of him. Gambino began to train Guts into a warrior at the age of 6. When he was 9, he killed his first man.
Griffith, in a state of depression and loss, seduces the princess and is caught the morning after. He is sentenced to life imprisonment and unlimited torture. The rest of The Band is ambushed and labeled fugitives, with Casca taking over command in the absence of Griffith and Guts.
Griffith attempts to stop Guts from leaving and is soundly beaten by a single swing of Guts’ sword, with Griffith having his blade sundered in two, and his head mere centimeters from being decapitated. Guts, having won his freedom sets out on his own personal journey.
He is able to lift and carry his Dragon Slayer, which weighs about 400lbs, with ease and able to shrug off punishments no other humans can survive.
Incredible Will: Guts has incredible willpower to allow him to survive even the harshest thing live throws at him. His will is incredible large to the point where he can cast away evil spirits trying to possess him.
Guts shoots several bolts from his crossbow, which deal damage and slow enemies' movespeed. The slow stacks with itself.
Guts (ガッツ Gattsu ), also known as the Black Swordsman, is the main protagonist of the manga/anime series Berserk.
Guts becomes untargetable for up to 3 seconds. Issuing a new order cancels the effect.
Guts gains a bonus to base damage and movespeed. All damage you take in this form will be received when the effect ends.
As the Golden Age closes out, we see Guts as a deranged, violent, skilled swordsman with little to no regard for life as a whole. During the Black Swordsman arc, he calms down a little. Where he was a rabid, wounded animal before we see Guts become a composed beast of sorts.
He was left in a pool of blood and filth to die alone. Sometime after, a band of mercenaries, led by one Gambino, happens upon Guts. Gambino believes Guts is dead before Guts begins crying. Immediately a woman named Shisu takes to him, despite his birth being considered ominous by her allies.
Afterward, Guts and Gambino develop a relationship that sees Guts begin honing his swordsmanship skills at a very early age, officially joining the mercenary band at just nine years old. Guts, at this point, saw Gambino as a father to him, that was until the night of Guts' first skirmish.
He fought a number of battles under the Hawk banner over a three-year time span and ultimately decided to leave to forge his own destiny, to live alongside Griffith as "a man of equal vision". Once Griffith intercepts Guts during his departure, Guts is commanded to duel Griffith once more for his freedom.
Sometime later, Gambino loses his leg and his and Guts' relationship deteriorates rapidly. Abuse and constant degrading eventually lead Gambino to try and make an attempt on Guts' life and, of course, Guts swiftly takes out his assailant -- his father figure.
Much later, during a siege on a military garrison, Guts is with yet another mercenary band. He gains the upper hand on an opposing leader and dispatches of him. Another short time period passes and Guts encounters the Falcons, during his travel, which intends to claim the reward on him for his interference.
With this he is given more than enough time to master the art of swordsmanship, eventually leading to his famous slaughter of a hundred men in a single battle. He and his sword the Dragon Slayer are not a force to be reckoned with.
Guts was born from the corpse of his lynched mother underneath a hanging tree, lying in a mire of blood and afterbirth. A mercenary group lead by a man named Gambino eventually happened upon the grisly site, presuming the infant to be dead.
One of Guts' most powerful assets is the Berserker Armor, an ancient, cursed suit of armor that allows the wearer to overcome his physical and mental limitations in combat but at the cost of damaging his already-weakened body. In Guts' case, the armor of strengthens his mind issues (depicted in Guts' case as a quadruped canine creature), to take over and endanger everyone in the vicinity, friend or foe (hence, berserk). The Armor has deadly effects on its user.
Because he is just a normal human, the strength to carry, much less to use and wield a sword of such magnitude with finesse and dexterity makes Guts a grand master swordsman of no ordinary level and skill , which shows up in every battle or duels that he partakes, especially when he is engaged with demonic beings.
After using the armor once, Guts lost some of his sense of taste, became slightly colorblind, and the stress of using it caused a patch of his hair to turn white, among other things. The armor can pierce his flesh from within to reinforce broken bones, enabling him to continue fighting long after his body to the point it would normally be exhausted.
In Guts' case, the armor of strengthens his mind issues (depicted in Guts' case as a quadruped canine creature), to take over and endanger everyone in the vicinity, friend or foe (hence, berserk). The Armor has deadly effects on its user.
Despite that, Guts still harbors a strong sense of justice and compassion, willing to fight for what's right and scorning Griffith for having betrayed everyone he once loved to become like a god. Although once lacking direction in life, he eventually finds himself understanding his love for combat, also devoting his life to fighting the strong.
In the series, Guts is a former mercenary and branded wanderer that travels the world in a constant internal struggle between exacting revenge on Griffith and the Godhand and protecting those dear to him. At one time driven solely by his will to survive during his days as a mercenary, Guts finds a purpose in life upon joining the Band of the Falcon after being defeated by its leader Griffith, greatly helping in the mercenary band's storied successes during the Hundred-Year War as captain of the band's raiders.
Guts has one of the strongest backstories with depth to his character, and understanding that causes him to have an impact on anime and manga fans. This is expressed through his quotes, which share many facets of life, his experiences, and more. Let’s share his best quotes.
1. Guts Quotes. “Humans are weak… but we want to live. Even if we’re wounded… or tortured… we feel the pain.”. – Guts. “ People who perish in other’s battles are worms…. If one can’t live their life the way they want, they might as well die.”. – Guts. “If you’re always worried about crushing the ants beneath you… you won’t be able to walk.”.

7 A LIFE OF WAR. After Guts took had his vengeance against his adoptive father, he became a wandering mercenary. He didn't exactly have a formal education and it was a dark medieval fantasy world so the only thing he could do was what he grew up doing, which is learning to kill people.
The people who found him were neither samaritans nor well-off, but mercenaries who are pretty much borderline bandits. The leader of the band was Gambino who also took the initiative in adopting Guts to make use of him in the future.
Griffith, in order to gain power and become a king, had to sacrifice his whole Band of the Hawk, including his best friend, Guts to the God Hand . The sadder part is that all this took place right after Guts risked his life to save Griffith from a slow certain death.
There's no doubt that Guts became attached to the Band of the Hawk especially since they were the closest thing he had to a caring family. Pippin, Corkus, Rickert, Casca-- even Griffith himself, all of them taught Guts to be human somehow.
Guts spent his puberty drifting between battlefields, joining as a sword-for-hire-- sometimes even serving as blood sport entertainment for nobles. It did make him independent and strong but it definitely wasn't a good way for a boy to grow up.
From the moment he was born, Guts' life was already pre-determined for agony. His mother was hanged in a tree moments before his birth and he was born in a pile of human guts, marinating there before some soldiers found him crying, hence the name.
He pretty much became emperor of the false utopia he built. It pretty much turned the whole world against Guts and he was only left with a handful of allies. This only intensified Guts' motivation for revenge against Griffith and thankfully, that justice is nearly in sight for the Berserk manga.
Not only that, but he's driven only by pure hatred for the man who wronged him, and he'll do anything to repay him for that wrong.
They both spend tons of their time killing demons and the like, the difference is that Guts doesn't have the same kind of spiritual energy, nor does he have a soul weapon. While Guts is able to take down demon after demon, Ichigo is stronger than most demons, can shield himself, and has immense energy stores.
Her Teigu, which is a type of equipment in the Akame Ga Kill ! universe, takes the form of a katana that's completely coated in a poison that'll kill someone almost immediately. There's no way she wouldn't at least get a cut in on Guts, and once she did, it would be over for him.
Guts would absolutely destroy Dio, mostly because he's already killed more fearsome foes. Both of the main characters of these manga fight through slews of the undead, but only Guts has the resolve and absolute malice in his heart that's required to take care of Dio, despite his super strength.
While Guts has a hatred for anything demonic, it probably won't help him. Rin is able to regenerate himself in minutes, and he's so frightening that he scared death himself! While the berserker armor has the ability to passively heal the wearer, it can work in the wrong way and literally kill them as well since it uses blood as fuel.
That being said, she has a little bit of an ace up her sleeve. She has the ability to stop time. No matter how hard Guts would fight , she could just freeze time and fill Guts full of AK47 ammo.
7 Couldn't Beat Guts: Dio Brando (JoJo 's Bizarre Adventure) Yet another character from Jojo 's Bizarre Adventure on our list is Dio Brando. The reason he's included here is that he has almost the same vibe as Griffith, even though Dio isn't as charismatic and immediately disarming in this arc, he also betrays our hero.
