"I wouldn't say the movie is really scary; it's more of a game of cat and mouse between L and Light," said director Adam Wingard at Comic Con, via Polygon. The psychological games played by L and Light are, indeed, thrilling, but what's really scary is how easily a teenager becomes a mass murderer.

Another. Another, also jokingly known as Final Destination: The Anime, is a newer show that appeals to the classic horror anime junkies. Taking place in a city that contains many secrets, Another focuses on the protagonist who just transferred to the high school and the eyepatch-wearing Mei Misaki.
October, the month of spooky, scary skeletons, pumpkin carvings, haunted houses, and delicious cider, is centered around Halloween fun. Halloween is such an awesome holiday, and seemingly everyone seems to be in the mood for candy, scares, horror, and everything bloody.
Shiki, an anime about vampires released around this time frame, really proves this notion wrong, standing out as a great horror anime. Taking place in the 1990s, Shiki follows the story of a village that like many of these series, happens to have mysterious deaths occurring.
Featuring a young prominent, brain surgeon named Tenma, the story unfolds as he is forced to make a grave decision one night, save the life of a boy or a mayor with high social standing. He chooses to save the boy who came in first, and the mayor dies. Not only does Tenma lose his reputation, but mysterious murders also begin to occur around him, all related to the boy he decided to save.
Dusk Maiden of Amnesia. Not as much of a horror anime as it is very Halloween-themed, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia follows the life of a ghost named Yuko who is attached to the school where Teiichi, a middle school student resides. Teiichi is able to see Yuko and investigates her death that took place in the school.
In an interesting turn of events, Tenma realizes that the child may be intertwined with fate itself, making for an interesting psychological horror story intended for a more mature audience. Monster is considered one of the classic horror anime that is timeless and a masterpiece of a story for years to come.
Sci-fi horror at its finest, Gantz is definitely not for those who are disturbed by gruesome murders and disturbing scenes. The world of Gantz is deadly, disgusting, and unavoidable. One day, two men attempt to save the life of a homeless man but end up dead themselves. They then find themselves in a barren apartment, with a black sphere known as Gantz. Here, their lives belong to a being who forces them to do missions to kill aliens.
If you haven’t heard of 2006’s Higurashi: When They Cry, now is a better time than ever to get into this classic horror anime series with the new 2020 series now available. Higurashi follows Maebara Keiichi, the new kid in town, who lives a somewhat peaceful life until he begins to learn about several murders that have happened over the past few years. Keiichi struggles to find the truth as he falls into an array of paranoia filled events. Definitely check this out before the 2020 series because the new anime may be a continuation and not a remake. Just a fair warning, as we’re just getting into the new fall season.
Another is an intriguing horror anime that will keep you glued to your screen. Protagonist Sakakibara Kouchi is a new transfer student to an infamous school known for a mysterious death. Kouchi finds that his classmates are acting a bit suspicious when it comes to that event from years ago, but finds comfort in a quiet girl with an eye patch. P.A. Works does an amazing job detailing the nuances in facial expressions and body language to create tension. The story is gripping and each episode will have you clicking next to see the events unfold.
1987’s Devilman: The Birth is the first OVA in the Devilman series, which starts with Ryo and Akira discovering the existence of demons and the fight for survival on Earth. The film manages to pack a lot of gore in its 50+min runtime, with demonic transformations, amazingly animated body horror, and decapitations aplenty - and that’s just the nightclub scene. The Birth OVA spawned two sequels. The Demon Bird and Amon: The Apocalypse of Devilman, before fans were blessed with Netflix’s modern take on the franchise with Devilman Crybaby. While the animation looks dated compared to Crybaby, Devilman: The Birth is worth checking out if you’re in the mood for some serious demonic gore.
1987’s Wicked City is about demonic creatures who keep trying to infiltrate the human world through a parallel dimension and the Black Guard, a special police force implemented to keep them in check. Starting off as a series of horror novels written by Hideyuki Kikuchi, the anime borrows from several genres, including body horror, science fiction and hentai. Yes, hentai.
Ghost Stories is one of the rare anime shows we would recommend you watch the dub over the sub, for the simple fact that it’s funny as hell. When ADV Films acquired the North American license for this one, it decided to hire a comedy writer (shout out to Steven Foster) and completely flipped the script … literally. With the comedy elements aside, Ghost Stories tells just that: ghost stories. It’s the tale of a young girl named Satsuki Miyanoshita who moves to her deceased mother’s hometown with her family, where she and a ragtag group of kids discover an abandoned school that appears to be haunted.
Satoshi Kon’s 1997 anime film Perfect Blue isn’t inherently considered a horror movie in the general sense, but more of a physiological thriller. Perfect Blue tells the story of a young J-Pop star who decides to leave her music career to become an actress. After a traumatic experience in one of her first acting roles, she slips into a state of psychosis where she’s unable to distinguish between the real world and fantasy. This is partially where the horror of the anime lies, along with depictions of gore and graphic violence. At one point, a man gets stabbed in the nards, and for us there’s nothing more horrific than seeing that, let alone experiencing it.
Tokyo Ghoul is another horror anime that all anime fans could enjoy. Tokyo Ghoul follows protagonist Ken Kaneki, who lives in a world where both humans and fleshing eating ghouls exist. Through a casual attraction came a near-death experience that forces Kaneki into a life of being part ghoul. On top of the action-packed story are some of the goriest horror scenes in anime. Studio Pierrot does an amazing job showcasing the balance between Kaneki’s ghoul side and his humanity with captivating animations. Whether you’re into horror or shonen anime, there’s a lot to love with Tokyo Ghoul.
Berserk, one of the most beloved and hard-to-find series, is a true treasure for those who are willing to go the extra mile to locate the original 1997 anime. YouTube is your friend. The series is based on Kentaro Miura’s famous manga. It is known for its intricate plots and detailed art.
Boring is the world of the shinigami (or death gods). The living world is thrown into chaos when Ryuk, the shinigami, drops his “Death Note”, a powerful notebook that can kill anyone provided the target knows their name and face. Light Yagami, a top high school student, discovers the deadly notebook.
Ganta Igarashi, a young man, is in middle school when a mysterious figure covered in blood appears through his classroom window. Ganta’s entire class is destroyed by the so-called “Red Man”. Ganta is not killed, but he receives a mysterious red crystal fragment from the Red Man in his chest.
Ciel Phantomhive, a 13-year-old boy, is the head of the Phantomhive household. He’s only 13 years old, but he is part of a large family that serves Queen Victoria. He is a brilliant detective like Sherlock Holmes and assists the Queen’s Police in solving crimes throughout London’s underbelly.
You probably wouldn’t expect Demon Slayer to be on this list. While it technically isn’t a horror anime, it offers plenty of creepy and horrifying villains and maybe a few shocking views for the more mainstream anime viewer.
Boogiepop Phantom anthology series is united by one constant: Boogiepop. This urban legend, which has been called Death personified, is Boogiepop Phantom. After a series of ritualistic murders for which Boogiepop was initially blamed, the show takes place in Japan. Is Boogiepop evil, or real?
The documentary Corpse Party: Tortured Souls takes a look at the lives of students at Kisaragi Academy. This school was previously known as Heavenly Host Elementary.
