English dubs can really ruin a series if they're not good, but for this list we're ranking the best English dubbed anime series of all time. Which English voice actors really got it right? We want you to vote up the anime series with the best English dub, no matter what genre the show is. Many of these top anime should be live action movies.
On the production side of things, much of the work that goes into creating the original anime must be executed with English voice actors. To begin, a cast must be chosen and hired. Next, the scripts must be translated to the dubbed language.
Some of the criteria that make a great beginner anime include a simple yet binge-worthy plot as well as a fast-paced first season.
Then the cast of voice actors must record and perform their lines. Considering that most anime seasons run between 12 and 24 episodes, this process can take a considerable amount of time.
Anime movie plots usually fail due to their inability to create an original story. Most movies are not based on manga material. Therefore it is up to the studio to write and produce the film. Thankfully studio Bones provides excellent character development for non-canon material.
Although extremely well-liked in the West, Naruto enjoyed just as much success in Japan. It is for this reason that many were deeply saddened to hear the news of the manga’s conclusion in 2014. The Last: Naruto the Movie debuted in 2014, the same year the manga reached its final chapter. Although the television anime would go on to air for three additional years, the events of this movie take place well beyond the anime and manga’s concluding chapter.
The success of My Hero Academia has ushered in a new era of anime. With the “Big 3” now a thing of the past, My Hero Academia is currently the lead Shounen title in the anime industry. As a testament to its popularity, the series earned its first movie titled My Hero Academia: Two Heroes. Based on Kōhei Horikoshi’s hit manga series, My Hero Academia is the superhero themed story of a boy name Izuku Midoriya. Despite his great dream of becoming a hero, Midoriya is uncommonly born without superpowers. After a fate encounter with the world’s greatest hero, Midoriya is acknowledged for having the heart of a hero. Number one hero All Might shares his power with the teenager who later enrolls in superhero school.
Studio Pierrot does some wonderful work adapting author Sui Ishida’s dark fantasy series. Tokyo Ghoul isn’t for the faint of heart. This anime combines several genres such as horror, psychological thriller, action, and drama to great success.
The one I just finished watching is a good place to start. In terms of the action/psychological genre, ‘Psycho-Pass’ is top-drawer. The series’ gloomy and suspenseful tone only adds to the enjoyment. The English dub for this anime is now available. This anime takes place in the near future, when a new anti-crime system called Sybil is being built.
One of the best dubs of an English-language anime I’ve ever seen. It’s a future Japan story. As a nation, we are still recovering from a catastrophic viral outbreak. GHQ, a military command structure, is now in charge of overseeing the country’s affairs. They’ve decided to take control of the populace and are frequently brutal in doing so.
Next, we have an anime of the sports subgenre. High school students with a love for swimming are the focus of ‘Free!’ In elementary school, the four of them were tight and won the relay tournament, but they have since parted ways. Several years later, the group reunites and tries to re-establish itself. However, there is a snag.
I’m a big fan of action movies. I sincerely believe that. In the action/comedy subgenre, this is one of my favorite shows. Kenichi, a bullied young man, is the focus of the story. He aspires to greatness, but instead of putting in the work, he gets his inspiration instead from literature.
This is an excellent blend of action and adventure. An era where knights are protectors of peace and justice is depicted in the story. The magical powers they have are used to keep humans safe. Even though they were beaten back by the holy knights, a gang of knights known as The Seven Deadly Sins attempted to overthrow their oppressors.
Bloodlust and vampire action fans, take note: this is your movie. Hellsing tells the story of a world where evil creatures lurk in the darkness, devouring any unfortunate humans they capture.
One of the best action/adventure series ever made. Jet, an ex-cop, is Spike’s sidekick and a bounty hunter. Later, a genetically modified corgi, a trickster named Faye Valentine, and a computer genius named Ed join the trio. A deeper and darker past for each of the characters is slowly revealed as the series progresses.
Ghost Stories is what happens when a whole dub goes off the script. Basically an official version of an Abridged Series, ADV thought that was the only way to fix the inherent problem with the series. The problem being that it was a dud.
Another entry in the series that has an outstanding performance by a male lead. Chris Patton plays Sousuke Sagara to perfection. Whether it be the perfect soldier or the fish out of water thrust into highschool, Sousuke Sagara is acted with just the right amount of undeserved confidence and smooth operator that is necessary for the role.
Far from anything groundbreaking at the time, Ghost Stories failed in Japan and was set to do the same in the US. Then, in a desperate attempt to salvage this series, ADV threw out the whole script and replaced it with a gag script. Changing the overall tone of the show from a low-class horror show into a South Park-esque comedy with all the politically incorrect humor and pop culture references that could fit into 25 minutes. They were only required to keep names, exorcisms, and meaning behind each episode intact when changing the script, which resulted in one of the most infamous dubs in anime history.
Unlike anime today which includes translated treatments, scripts, and bibles for the show , Samurai Pizza Cats came with either poorly translated versions of those things or none at all. Leaving the localizers a whole show they needed to make sense of.
He isn't the only one with a stand out performance though. Laura Chapman absolutely kills is as Reiko Terayama.
That's not to say the rest of the dub wasn't a success. In many ways, the American dub could be considered better than the original Japanese dub. It added several jokes and in character lines that are absent from the original release that fit the amazing voice acting and characters, making this a treat to watch from start to finish.
Classroom Of The Elite is the first horrendous film on our list. The series benefits from a superb dub and is one of the most fascinating concepts available.
While we’re on the subject of high school, check out this incredible new-generation high school series. Hyouka is a 22-episode 2012 anime series.
After that, we have a series that can stand on its own as a Mecha series. The game’s title is Fullmetal Panic. There are 24 episodes in this anime series about military mecha.
Charlotte, a mystical teleporter, is our next addition. The beginnings of this television series trace back to 2015. Asai Yoshiyuki directed the film, which was scripted by Maeda Jun.
It is an illustration based on Iwaaki Hitoshi’s comic Parasyte. The anime was directed by Shimizu Kenichi and animated by Studio Madhouse.

Most anime fans have already seen or at least heard of Attack on Titan. Given that it's one of the most popular anime series in recent years, it'd be a pity to miss out on this cultural phenomenon. Every anime fan needs to add at least one sports anime to their repertoire, simply because real-life sports could never compare. Haikyuu!!, a highly rated volleyball anime, is a great choice because it combines compelling character development with thrilling action scenes, rather than leaning too hard in one direction or the other.
CLANNAD remains one of the most renowned romance anime of all time, and for good reason. On the surface, this show is a light-hearted harem show, but in the second series, After Story, things get serious for Nagisa and Tomoya.
Sports drama is a popular theme in anime. Over the years, we have seen some great sports anime like ‘Free!’, ‘Ping Pong: The Animation’, etc. ‘Tsurune: Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu’ is a sports drama which revolves around the archery art, Kyūdō. ‘Attack on Titan’ is one of the most popular anime right now. The series first aired in the year 2015 and has been going strong ever since, amassing a huge fan following. The anime is entertaining. The concept is not something new but the implementation is quite great. The art and animation of the anime are pretty decent too. The attention to detail when it comes to the fight scenes is decent. The story of this anime revolves around humans trying to fend off attacks from large humanoid monsters they call Titans who are slowly pushing humanity to the brink of extinction. As a last effort, humans create a special gear, the 3D manoeuvring gear, which allows them to fight the Titans. The first half of the third season released the previous year. For the second half, we might have to wait until April this year.
Fairy Tail: Final Series. If you are a fan of the ‘Fairy Tail’ anime series then you will be happy to know that the episodes of the final season of the series which is currently going on are now available in English. So far the series finale looks good.
Although there were quite a few anime releases in the romance genre ‘Yagate Kimi ni Naru’ was by far one of the best. If you like romantic anime and have been looking for something which has an English version then go for ‘Yagate Kimi ni Naru’ without a doubt.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica is the best magical girl anime because kids, or at least young teens, can enjoy it, but it's mature enough to appeal to a wider audience. It's solidly rooted in the magical girl genre, but with a darker approach and subversion of many genre tropes.
The reason Fullmetal Alchemist is the best fantasy anime of all time is that it paints a fully realized, unique world with internally consistent rules that have real consequences. Building on that foundation, it delivers a story about two brothers that's as grounded as the setting is fantastic.
Anime is known for mixing genres, which is how you get shows like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. While Haruhi is a slice-of-life anime on a superficial level, there's a lot more weirdness going on there. The show elevates itself beyond genre limitations, with elements of mystery and science fiction.
Without Dragon Ball, the fighting anime genre as we know it today probably wouldn't exist.
Most anime horror series are referred to as horror because of the monsters, like High School of the Dead. These series tend to be light on what western audiences think of as horror. Still, When They Cry straddles the line.
FLCL gets the nod because it's short, sweet, visually beautiful, and somehow extremely relatable. The series only got six episodes, but that plays to its benefit. Each episode is jam-packed with no sagging in the middle.
Anime has a reputation for being kid stuff, because of the connection between animation and kids cartoons in the West. The truth is that most anime isn't for kids, as evidenced by all the TV-14, TV-MA, and R ratings on this list. If you're looking for a great anime kids movie, the best place to start is Studio Ghibli.
