Sword Art Online ( Japanese: ソードアート・オンライン, Hepburn: Sōdo Āto Onrain) is a Japanese light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec.
The light novel series spans several virtual reality worlds, beginning with the game, Sword Art Online ( SAO ), which is set in a world known as Aincrad. Each world is built on a game engine called the World Seed, which was initially developed specifically for SAO by Akihiko Kayaba, but was later duplicated for ALfheim Online ( ALO ), and later willed to Kirito, who had it leaked online with the successful intention of reviving the virtual reality industry. A third world known as Gun Gale Online ( GGO) appears in the third arc and is stylized as a FPS game instead of an RPG, and is the main setting of Alternative Gun Gale Online. It was created using the World Seed by an American company. A fourth world appears in the fourth arc known as the Underworld (UW). The world itself was created using the World Seed as a base, but it is as realistic as the real world due to using many powerful government resources to keep it running.

This SAO is a brilliant anime interpretation of the Japanese light novel series of the same name by Reki Kawahara. It is crazily successful in Japan and worldwide, thanks to its excellent animation and storyline.
Aniplex staff members were in the process of screen-testing the SAO: Ordinal Scale movie, according to Manabu Ono, who revealed in an official interview that “they were preparing to adopt the whole Sword Art Online series” at the time he talked with them.
We should only observe it for the action. Because it is not a ‘full action anime due to the love story as well as other aspects implicated, we should read the novel.
It’s because they underestimated how good it was. People want to see combat sequences in Dragon Ball Z, but few genuinely want to focus on the plot.
Everyone is dissatisfied with how SAO transitioned from a “dark survival” game to an anime filled with romance. That, on the other hand, was never an issue for some of us.
There are even side stories that feature other supporting characters such as Silica and Lisbeth. Some side stories also fill in some story between light novels, such as a Sword Art Online: Alicization side story when Kirito and Asuna were stuck inside the world for 200 years. It detailed their lives, as well as the fate of the other characters.
Perhaps because they are a series of books , the light novels have noticeablely slower pacing than the anime. This makes for a snapneck pacing at some places, and a snail's pace in others.
Since Kirito is the protagonist of the story, it is told from his perspective. Because of this, his thoughts are more transparentーonly in the light novel, though. From how he first thought of being trapped in the game world to his interactions with the other girls and Asuna, his thoughts are laid out bare.
To fit time restrictions, sometimes decisions have to be made. This is the case with the anime adaption, which happens to cut a considerable amount of lines and phrases. The light novel has a lot of speaking in it, from character quips to information. However, the anime cut down on this, instead focusing on showing, not telling.
The light novels don't exactly pan everything out in chronological order. For instance, despite the Aincrad arc ending, the light novels sometimes go back to a past instance and recap the reader. This is a bit frustrating at times, as it flip flops between the past and current events that are taking place in an arc.
5 The Light Novel Adds Story. Because Sword Art Online was originally a web novel, some bits of the story was not added into the finished light novel. However, since the author wished to add in more story at times, some bits of information would be added in throughout arcs.
This may come as a surprise to some fans, but the anime contains way more fan service than the light novels . This is true to characters such as Suguha, and the antagonist Quinella who walks around naked half the time she's shown in the anime.
