The 97 Berserk anime is great. After that go read the manga, from beginning on. 97 is good overall but if you want peak Beserk then read the manga. Not the 2016 version. If you can find the 97 version watch that, if not then read the manga. Depends. How much do you make an hour? 1997 anime of Beserk is excellent.
Notable Moments:
Why Should You Not Watch It?
Will Berserk ever get a proper anime adaptation? In this era of anime tropes it is highly unlikely that it would get a "proper" adaptation (the proper here being in my eyes, at least).
Berserk is a definite must-see for all fans of anime. For those who dislike anime or are indifferent to it, the mediocre visuals may tarnish your opinion of it, yet the rock solid plot and character depth with leave you amazed.
Perhaps this is why, to my mind, Berserk is the greatest fantasy anime franchise of all time – in any form, it presents a fascinating story with strong characters and pure emotional themes of rage, revenge and redemption which can only told in a brutal and uncompromising way. In short, it has guts.
If you forget the animation, then this anime is pretty good. Exactly what I expected and wanted to see as a sequel to the original series. The dark and raw atmosphere is still there, even darker. Guts is as badass as always and you even see some old characters not only in flashbacks.
If we go with the first definition, berserk is underrated, it is a very good fantasy series that nobody outside of anime circles know about, even in anime circles, people who are into daytime anime as opossed to nighttime anime don't know about it.
4 Character Relationships Drive The Plot While, at the base of the narrative, Berserk is certainly a revenge story, it is helped driven forward and kept interesting, exciting, and compelling by the relationships between the characters.
The manga of Berserk had no plot holes, no extra story to explain how things work in the world, no side content that you need to buy, no pointless character arcs (looking at you CW), and no lame tropes. What makes Berserk such a masterpiece is the usage of two characters as plot devices, Griffith and Guts.
Berserk definitely has elements of horror and some pretty scary moments, but in general, it's not considered horror. Like Makkuro said, it's more along the lines of action/adventure.
While Berserk rarely, if ever, stoops to shallow shock value in its chapters, the material is notoriously R-rated, from graphic action scenes to unspeakable acts vividly depicted in the panels, and they are not suitable even for a seinen anime series.
18+ ratingIt definitely earns the 18+ rating that its English publisher, Dark Horse Comics, gives it. Over the course of his journey, Guts encounters a myriad of foes ranging from humans, creatures of myth and folklore, demonic entities, and even some demi-gods.
