The 97 Berserk anime is great. After that go read the manga, from beginning on. 97 is good overall but if you want peak Beserk then read the manga. Not the 2016 version. If you can find the 97 version watch that, if not then read the manga. Depends. How much do you make an hour? 1997 anime of Beserk is excellent.
Notable Moments:
Why Should You Not Watch It?
Will Berserk ever get a proper anime adaptation? In this era of anime tropes it is highly unlikely that it would get a "proper" adaptation (the proper here being in my eyes, at least).
The Animation Thankfully, Berserk was given what many agree to be the best animated adaptation it's seen so far right out of the gate. Many fans of Berserk have been fans for years, but even newer fans still find that retro 90s look to be nostalgic. It reminds many of the early Toonami days.
Perhaps this is why, to my mind, Berserk is the greatest fantasy anime franchise of all time – in any form, it presents a fascinating story with strong characters and pure emotional themes of rage, revenge and redemption which can only told in a brutal and uncompromising way. In short, it has guts.
If we go with the first definition, berserk is underrated, it is a very good fantasy series that nobody outside of anime circles know about, even in anime circles, people who are into daytime anime as opossed to nighttime anime don't know about it.
The very first thing to watch in your Berserk anime experience is the original series. An adaptation from the Black Swordsman and Golden Age manga arcs, watching this will quickly get you up to speed with Guts and his time spent with the Band of the Hawk.
The manga of Berserk had no plot holes, no extra story to explain how things work in the world, no side content that you need to buy, no pointless character arcs (looking at you CW), and no lame tropes. What makes Berserk such a masterpiece is the usage of two characters as plot devices, Griffith and Guts.
In my humble opinion, Berserk is the best. Its by no means an easy decision, but I feel Berserk is the closest to perfection out of all four of these series. Let's break it down into categories. But first let me highlight why I love all four of these series so much before I talk about why one reigns supreme in my eyes.

At the absolute basis of Miura's Berserk, at its core, is a dark fantasy action manga series. Therefore, the action displayed throughout the narrative has to be thrilling, well drawn, and, in this case given the target demographic, brutal and gory.
One good anime like Berserk is Claymore, which also follows a powerful swordsman and her comrades as they fight against a world of demons. Other good anime like Berserk include Ninja Scroll, Devilman Crybaby, and Fist of the North Star.
For me, I think Monster is the more consistent and better manga. Berserk never got finished since its author tragically died before being able to end it. But that being said: The two manga are on totally different scales of the spectrum.

Berserk Trailer. While the 1997 anime adaptation still did a fair amount of justice to the story, the 2016 version was a complete flop. There is absolutely no need to consider watching that version. You will be left with a very bitter taste in your mouth.
1. Quick Answer. It is a unanimous opinion that the two anime adaptations are nowhere as good as the original manga. The anime adaptations are abridged versions of the manga, which leave out a lot of crucial scenes. Berserk.
4. Author’s Note. While the anime adaptations are very messy and don’t do justice to the manga, they should be forgiven as the two are extremely different mediums.
The 2016 version was a continuation of the events that had transpired in other movies and the 1997 version, all set in the Berserk universe. It has been at the receiving end of harsh criticism for its unflattering adaptation and its dilution of many beautiful scenes in the manga. 3.
Most anime lovers agree that some studios’ choice to use 3D animation ruins the viewing experience. Studios often employ this tactic to animate large action pieces for a cheaper price, but it is oftentimes overused and undeveloped in appearance. Back in 1997 however, the classic 2D look reigned supreme.
Berserk is easily one of the most influential, well-written, and well-drawn manga of all time, and the late Kentaro Miura’s work is heralded for the amazing world-building, character development, and polarizing moments throughout the story. From an early age, his ideas for Berserk were seen by others as legendary despite him being a novice.
With all this talk about how amazing the 97’ Berserk anime is, it would be reasonable to wonder how it compares to the more recent adaptations of the series.
Despite these official adaptations not living up to the hopes fans’ had for the series, some fans have taken it upon themselves to create the anime they’d love to see. One fan in particular has been working on an adaptation of Guts vs. Rosine from the Lost Children Arc.
