Notable Moments:
You could read the manga first, and while many would recommend this i think watching the anime first i think you get more attached to the characters and atmosphere of Berserk. Start with 1997 and then Golden Age movies if you want, they basically cover the same arc. I recommend the dub for both of those, all the actors do a fantastic job there.
The 97 Berserk anime is great. After that go read the manga, from beginning on. 97 is good overall but if you want peak Beserk then read the manga. Not the 2016 version. If you can find the 97 version watch that, if not then read the manga. Depends. How much do you make an hour? 1997 anime of Beserk is excellent.
Perhaps this is why, to my mind, Berserk is the greatest fantasy anime franchise of all time – in any form, it presents a fascinating story with strong characters and pure emotional themes of rage, revenge and redemption which can only told in a brutal and uncompromising way. In short, it has guts.
A second 24-episode anime television series adaptation was broadcast for two seasons in 2016 and 2017. As of May 2021, the Berserk manga had over 50 million copies in circulation, including digital versions, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time.
If we go with the first definition, berserk is underrated, it is a very good fantasy series that nobody outside of anime circles know about, even in anime circles, people who are into daytime anime as opossed to nighttime anime don't know about it.
The reason Berserk is so popular is because it doesn't paint a fairytale world like most other manga. It makes a bloody world and tells a great story about one man's quest for revenge.
For me, I think Monster is the more consistent and better manga. Berserk never got finished since its author tragically died before being able to end it. But that being said: The two manga are on totally different scales of the spectrum.
The manga of Berserk had no plot holes, no extra story to explain how things work in the world, no side content that you need to buy, no pointless character arcs (looking at you CW), and no lame tropes. What makes Berserk such a masterpiece is the usage of two characters as plot devices, Griffith and Guts.

2 Attack On Titan One could argue that Berserk elevated brutality to an art form. Attack on Titan has taken this art form and reworked it for this generation of anime fans. For the most part, it did it successfully.
The most obvious similarity between the two stories is that they are both not afraid to depict graphic violence. Characters are constantly meeting their violent ends through all kinds of medieval action. Kids shouldn't be allowed within a hundred feet of Game of Thrones and Berserk.
The art and animation are bad, even for a show aired in 1997, and especially compared to the manga art, which is among the most detailed you'll find. The plot and characters have only minor differences from the manga, and those are both solid. 1. level 2. Gluzin.
It's amazing, of course the manga is better but you should still watch the anime, it's a true classic and the soundtrack is probably the best I've ever heard. I allways here that the Berserk anime is way worse then the Manga. That's what you get when you compare a good quality show to a top-tier manga masterpiece.
But to answer your question, yes, the Berserk anime is good, although the animation is a bit dated. (Random trivia: the anime was produced by the guys who makes Pokemon and Yokai Watch. Go figure.) The story and music, on the other hand, are timeless, and is enough to merit it a watch.
There are inherent challenges to adapting a manga series or light novel series into an anime, from pacing to animation quality and finding suitable voice actors, and Berserk is particularly challenging, as the two existing anime shows already prove. One challenge is the extreme nature of Berserk 's content.
Most pop culture fans know the phrase "the book was better," and this often applies to the manga industry as well. Manga artists can pour their full talents onto the page and create truly memorable and impactful art, and Kentaro Miura was well-known for this.
While not always in the mainstream, and definitely not nearly as available anywhere in the west as it is now, manga has had a long and running history in mainstream media. In that long and running history, there have been many genres and series that have graced the medium and some that fell flat, as is unavoidable in any media platform.
At the absolute basis of Miura's Berserk, at its core, is a dark fantasy action manga series. Therefore, the action displayed throughout the narrative has to be thrilling, well drawn, and, in this case given the target demographic, brutal and gory.
Not there is anything wrong with the more lighthearted nature of many manga and anime out there, particularly with the shonen genre, this one is definitely for those that are fans of the more dark, gritty, and serious. It has probably been said many times before, but the tones that Berserk relies upon is comparable to George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and HBO TV series Game of Thrones.
While, at the base of the narrative, Berserk is certainly a revenge story, it is helped driven forward and kept interesting, exciting, and compelling by the relationships between the characters. The main cast that comes along Guts in his journey helps contribute to this, but the main relationships that drive the plot are between the main trio of characters early on in the story.
For those who are fans of fantasy, but not quite the high fantasy of The Lord of the Rings, Berserk is the perfect setting. Once again, its dark fantasy setting is very much akin to that of Martin's aforementioned book and TV series A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones.
Unlike many pieces of media, in whatever platform or medium they inhabit (books, TV, film, video games, etc.), or any given piece of fiction especially, in Kentaro Miura's Berserk, good and evil are not so clearly defined. Instead, Kentaro Miura chooses to paint the characters in a light dependent on the events of their lives and allows the audience, in this case, reader, to decide for themselves how to view them.
However, Berserk has been a long-running manga since the late 1980s and has consistently, and unfortunately with its fair share of hiatuses, consistently told and illustrated a compelling narrative for a longer amount of time. No disrespect given to works like the aforementioned newer works of Vagabond and Vinland Saga.
Unlike the anime, the manga focused on Guts in the present before taking readers into a flashback that elaborated on his character before the events that changed him. However, neither the '97 anime nor the Golden Age Arc film trilogy really need to touch upon these moments at all.
One simply cannot talk about the positives of the '97 anime series without mentioning its stellar soundtrack, which is still an integral part of pop culture to this day. They elevate the fight scenes to a whole new level.
One of the major highlights of both the Berserk anime and manga are definitely the fight scenes, especially the ones where Guts takes center-stage. Watching this monstrous soldier wield his massive sword to cut down any enemy that lies in his path is a visual treat that doesn't get boring anytime soon.
Berserk 's first arc has witnessed two adaptations, and both of them are brilliant. However, while the '97 anime is great in its own right, one can't deny the fact that this show does feel somewhat outdated today. Yet, that is not the case with the Golden Age Arc film trilogy, which is excellent and worth a watch for any fan of stellar animation.
The changes that the anime and movies make in terms of the storytelling and pacing lead to an arc that is concise, entertaining — and absolutely brutal during the final moments, when the infamous Eclipse dooms the Bank of the Falcon.
It would be impossible to talk about the best aspects of the Berserk manga without giving due credit to the absolutely breathtaking artwork of the manga. Kentaro Miura was a master of his craft and this can be seen in each and every panel of the manga, regardless of how mundane the events around it may be.
Berserk is full to the brim with iconic moments that most anime and manga fans are well aware of. While the '97 anime and the movie do a great job of translating these moments into the medium of animation, one has to admit that the manga is simply better when it comes to conveying these moments.
Berserk has been in publication before the 90s even started! So, it's only a given that Miura's artwork didn't remain static since the moment his manga was serialized — it obviously developed and became more refined over time, and one need only read the latest chapters to witness this transformation firsthand.
Berserk is easily one of the grittiest manga ever drawn, with some of the panels being downright uncomfortable to read through. However, that's precisely why so many people love Berserk — it doesn't shy away from showing just how depressing and brutal its world really is.
The '97 Berserk anime and the movies are definitely great watches that any fan of the series should definitely check out. However, due to censorship and pacing requirements, the pacing of these animations can feel rather off at times.
This is arguably the biggest reason why any aspiring fan of Berserk should read the manga instead of watching the show. The manga is well on its way to reaching a proper conclusion — or, at least, as proper a conclusion as Berserk can reach, given the circumstances.
This is a point that absolutely needs to be addressed, given the fact that some people might be confused as to why so many fans give the new Berserk anime a wide berth. Any person who simply has to watch the Berserk anime should just stay content with the old series and the movies.
