Funimation is ridiculously exciting for anyone dipping their toes into the world of anime. There are almost 700 different shows, films, and live-action series to watch, with lots of exclusives that can’t be seen anywhere else. Cowboy Bebop, Dragon Ball Z, Black Lagoon, and Yu Yu Hakusho are all here ready and waiting to be watched.
However, for those who prefer dubbed anime, Funimation offers greater content. While Crunchyroll does have some dubbed titles, Funimation offers "Simuldubs," released simultaneously in Japan. This gives Funimation the upper hand for anime fans who wish to watch their anime in English.
In North America, Funimation's edited dub concluded with Episode 167 in March, 2008; the dub would continue to air in Australia, where it soon switched from edited to uncut versions.
The Premium plan is priced at $5.99 per month or $59.99 annually. This gets you ad-free access to the entire Funimation library across most devices and platforms. You get access to both dubbed and subbed content.
Following the official merge of Funimation and Crunchyroll, the Funimation YouTube channel is now becoming Crunchyroll Dubs, a channel that will host dubbed anime for the company.
The coronavirus (COVID-19) shockwaves have now engulfed the anime industry too. Funimation has closed its offices and asked employees to work from home as a preventive measure. Elaborating on its decision, Funimation stated the health and safety of its employees is more important than getting the dubs out on time.
If you've played a show with English dubbing and there are no other language options, it's most likely due to licensing. Namely, some shows are permitted to be dubbed only, and you can't switch them to Japanese audio. Funimation has rights for dubbing but not for subtitles in some cases.
Funimation vs Crunchyroll: Anime content While Crunchyroll's humongous anime library hands down the winner, there's more to the anime on Funimation. Furthermore, both Funimation and Crunchyroll have their exclusives; however, when it comes to individuality, Funimation tends to focus on English anime dubs.
Funimation Like with Crunchyroll, the FunimationNow Android app and FunimationNow iOS app allow you to stream anime for free. The app's layout functions similarly to Crunchyroll with a few tweaks.
The anime revolves around the lives of school children who possess quirks (special powers) and how they’re sent to special schools for heroes to train and become the best versions of themselves.
One of the most interesting aspects of this anime was how Hak had 3 voice actors perform for him – one for his childhood version, one for his teenage version, and one for his adult version!
Funimation has been a pioneer when it comes to anime dubs, and this article celebrates some of its most popular dubbed series of all time.
Much like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Attack on Titan is an action anime whose dub is often quoted and talked about more than its subbed version. It’s not really a surprise, seeing how emotional and powerful everyone’s performances are in it.
Not many are aware of this fact, but one of the most beloved shounen anime of all time was actually dubbed by Funimation! The anime is a sequel to Dragon Ball, and it occurs five years later from the original series. Goku is now a father and he is visited by his long lost brother Raditz.
Bryce Papenbrook (who seems to be Funimation’s go-to guy for a hot-headed shounen male lead) voices Rin Okumura and does his job to the T. The other VAs too did an excellent job, but Christine Marie Cabanos faced a tiny bit of fans’ ire because of how whiny and high pitched Shiemi’s voice was.
Dubbed anime has often received harsh criticism, but the truth is that dubs are exactly like subs – some are good and some are bad. While there’s no denying older dubs were seldom up to the mark, there’s also no denying that dubs of recent anime, especially those from the last five years, have been nothing but excellent!
Spice and Wolf. This is probably the best romance anime of all time. The interactions between Holo and Kraft are top-tier, probably because of the excellent dialogue. Aside from the romantic elements, the series offers great insight into the economics of being a merchant in medieval times.
While most romance anime are set in high school, there is something about them that makes them relatable across the ages. Maybe the commonality of feelings gets to all of us. Regardless, there is nothing like a well-written romance anime to get one’s heart pumping. Personally, I like to watch subbed series exclusively.
This series is surely going to make you cry. Anohana is an emotionally powerful story centered around a cast of strong characters with slow development. Its the kind of story where you feel all the emotions of the characters, in sadness and in triumph. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day | Source: Netflix.
Funimation is a large and growing anime streaming service from North America. It specializes in English dubbed anime. There are a lot of huge shows here that you probably know, including the Dragon Ball series, Attack on Titan, One Piece, and many others. The service also has a merch store with collectibles and other things along ...
The show is quite good despite being an adaptation of the visual novel game on PC. It only lasts for 13 episodes, but it’s rather enjoyable with excellent pacing and enough throwbacks to the game to make players happy without losing people new to the series. If you play the game for the second story, Funimation has the third story in anime form here as well. It’s a bit of a weird series to get into, but it’s one of the best mystery anime on Funimation.
Tsukigakirei (romance) Tsukigakirei (technically Tsuki ga Kirei) is a romance coming-of-age anime about two high school kids learning more about who they are. Kotarō and Akane meet for the first time in high school and become close as equipment managers for the school’s sports festival.
The two have friends, but the show revolves around their blossoming romance. It takes some twists and turns toward the end, but it’s generally a satisfying entrant into the genre with a bunch of excellent moments. It runs for 12 total episodes.
It’s about a 17 year old who lost his family in an accident and lives alone. He is often in the company of three neighboring sisters who help take care of him as he figures out life.
It’s about a woman who helps out a random dragon she ran into. The dragon repays the debt by becoming her maid.
Fairy Tail is a vastly underrated super-series and one of the best anime on Funimation. It aired during the early 2010’s and finished up its 328 episode run in early 2020. A lot of anime fans prefer subtitles over English dubs and usually I do too.
It’s only showing the first 20 items I added to the list. But I want to see the recently added items first, or have it put what I mot recently watched in the front.
