“A G-pen. When you buy it, it's straight like this. But when it's straight like it's hard for me to use, so I modify it slightly using dental pliers like this.”
Junji Ito is a Japanese comics artist who specializes in horror, most famous for his large-scale works, Spiral, Gyo, and Tomie. Spiral in particular is usually seen as his masterwork, but to my mind his vast output of short stories is even more remarkable.
People are being twisted, become warped and turn into forms barely resembling human beings. We see people turning into spirals or becoming rotten abominations and elongated versions of themselves. It's this reliance on body horror that makes Junji Ito's work so terrifying.
I took a pencil and paper, or sometimes the back of advertisements, and would draw frames, imitating the manga I had read. So, I started before I even entered elementary school. It was just for fun, of course. That was how I began.
Junji Ito: “I'm fully digital these days. Drawing on paper is still much more fun for me.” He transitioned to digital because the process is so much easier than dealing with screentone.

Uzumaki is a bit of a psychological horror as it shows the citizens of the town slowly going insane, but there is plenty of disturbing body-horror imagery to satisfy hardcore fans of the genre. As Nagahama himself teases in the video, "there are lots of scary and grotesque scenes."

By far the most mentally terrifying was when Tomie came back from her spilled blood but used the plastic underneath the carpet to help form her body… and then made out with a guy she had seduced. There's gore and blood and disturbing images all throughout the story, but all that does is contribute to the horror.
While artists have varying preferences about how to structure an anime character’s head and face, they all start with the same basic principle: First draw a circle, and then draw a horizontal line and vertical line directly ...
Start by sketching a curved upper eyelid, then draw a short line extending down from the outer corner of the eye. Leave the inner corner of the eye open for a softer look. Then, add a circle in the middle of the eye as the iris. Draw a smaller circle—the pupil—in the middle of the iris.
The legs of an anime character should be approximately as long as the top half of the character, from the top of the head to the waist. Finally, add in the arms. A good rule of thumb is to align the elbow with the character’s waist, and then extend the rest of the arm (including the hand) to about mid-thigh.
While you will mostly ink with a black pen, it can also be helpful to have a white jelly pen on hand—you can use this to add highlights, like the reflection points in the character’s eyes. You may also choose to add additional colors with colored pencils or medium of your choice.
Leave the inner corner of the eye open for a softer look. Then, add a circle in the middle of the eye as the iris. Draw a smaller circle—the pupil—in the middle of the iris. To create primary and secondary light reflections, add in one or two additional circles within the iris.
Anime drawing and character design is unique in that it allows for open-ended creativity while still remaining within standard design principles, like proportions.
