One defining feature of anime eyes is that they are usually much bigger and wider than real eyes; so that is how we will draw them. The eyes should be far enough apart that you can fit a third eye in between. For a normal expression draw the iris slightly covered by the top eyelid while just touching the bottom eyelid.

Drawing is hard because our brains interpret anything we see as a whole, and our eyes don't create an authentic image of what we draw. Drawing becomes even more difficult because we tend to draw things as we know them, but not as they are. Learning to see is hard, so drawing is hard.

9 steps for drawing anime eyes. Let’s get started with the steps, beginning with the rough stage and ending with the clean-up stage. Step 1: upper eyelid line. Begin by sketching a slightly curved shape with multiple lines.
Today’s lesson is going to be a step by step how to draw anime eyes for beginners. We’ll cover both male and female eyes. As well as showing you how to add color using markers.
Female anime eyes vertical placement. To place the eyes on the head vertically divide the head into two and draw them below the middle halfway point. Please note that real eyes are usually positioned directly on this line but in anime eyes tend to be drawn lower down on the head.
Female Anime Eye Specifics (Before You Start Drawing) Anime eyes are almost always drawn bigger and wider than real eyes. This is especially so for female characters who often have larger and wider eyes than their male counterparts.
One thing that really sets female anime eyes apart from male are more prominent eyelashes (longer, thicker, and more of them). This is not always the case but it does tend to be so.
Shade the eyelids which are also technically part of the eyelashes black. Shade the pupil black as well.
To place the eyes out you can simply leave a distance of the width of one eye between them.
Draw the iris vertically stretched (compared to a real eye). Basically an oval with the top and bottom hidden by the eyelids.
The first place you want to add the eyelashes to is the outer corners of the eye. Generally eyelashes (real eyelashes) sort of fan out around the eyelids so you can draw anime eyelashes in a similar way. Next add some smaller eyelashes at the inner corner of the eye.
Make the eyes about 1/6th the height of the head and 1/4th the width of the head, if you’re drawing one. That way, they’ll look big and exaggerated.
Learn more... One of the most recognizable features of anime is the eyes. They’re big, they’re expressive, and they’re often exaggerated to show emotion. Anime eyes are only made up of a few basic shapes and they don’t have a lot of detail, so they’re actually pretty simple to draw.
To draw the eyelashes, start at the outer corner of the eye, and draw a few upward-curving lines coming off of the upper lash line. The eyelashes should span about 1/4th of the upper lash line. Make each line about 1/15th the length of the upper lash line itself. Then, thicken the lines with your pencil so they’re bold like the rest of the upper lash line.
Sketch the upper and lower lash lines. First, draw a horizontal line with a slight curve. Then, draw a line with a slight upward curve coming down off one end of the first line (the end that will be the outer corner of the eye) at a 45-degree angle. Make this line about 1/3 the length of the first line you drew. At this point, the upper lash line will have a C-shape, and you’ll be able to see the outer corner of the eye. To draw the lower lash line, draw a short, horizontal line with a slight curve centered under the upper lash line.
Make the top and bottom of the oval overlap with the lash lines so the top and bottom are hidden. Make the width at the widest part of the oval the same as the length of the lower lash line. This will be the iris of the eye. ...
First, draw a downward curving line for the upper lash line. Add a curved tail at one end (draw it on the end that's going to be the outer corner of the eye), going down and back toward the other end of the line, so the upper lash line is C-shaped.
Make a smaller circle near the bottom of the oval on the opposite side. For example, if you drew the first circle on the top-right side of the oval, draw the smaller circle on the bottom-left side. Draw the circle so it’s about 1/2 the size of the first circle. This circle will also look like reflected light when you shade in your drawing.
A basic understanding of the anatomy of the eye. Knowing common elements that make most eyes look like anime eyes. A step-by-step approach to drawing anime eyes while implementing these common elements. A quick note, before going further, I will use the term anime to mean both anime and manga for simplicity.
With that said, here are seven common elements present in most anime drawings of eyes.
Upper eyelid crease. – The upper eyelid crease is a horizontal indent formed above the upper eyelid that appears in some people. Notably, it is prominently indicated in most anime eye drawings, and stylized into a curved line. It helps situate the anime eye drawing so it is a good idea to take notice of it.
We also discovered that anime eye drawings simplify real world anatomy in specific ways. I found seven ways actually, you may find more, but the basic seven simplifications in anime eyes are as follows.
– the iris is a ring shaped membrane, with an adjustable circular opening (pupil) in the center. The iris is what people talk about when they talk about eye color. (Some people confuse it with the pupil, so here is a tip to remember it better: eye color = iris color)
You only need to know eight (8) anatomy terms of the eye, most, if not all, of which you probably already know. This knowledge in this case is required mainly for purposes of placement and understanding the rest of the article.
Degrees of realism and stylization. In anime and manga, eyes are drawn in various degrees of stylization. Human anatomy in anime is stylized often to the point of being unrealistic, yet still very recognizable as the anime counterpart of the real world person the artwork is describing. This is an important point.
Baylee Jay shows you five different ways you can draw anime and manga eyes. In this tutorial, Baylee will walk you through the way she draws those beautiful looking anime manga eyes.
What is pretty obvious in anime and manga art is that their eyes are big and wide. However, in mature anime drawings, the eye, as well as the shape of the head, do follow the rules of realistic human anatomy. In this article, I’ve tried to cover as many aspects as possible when it comes to drawing manga eyes.
You will get to see how the artist creates eight different manga eyes, and while we can debate whether there is enough variation to justify the eight “different” styles, it’s still cool to see the drawing process nevertheless.
The artist shows you four different styles of anime eyes for you to try and draw. Moe-moe, kind, cool, and emotionless is the four different styles you can learn from this art tutorial.

Anime eyes are really fun to draw because you get to exaggerate the features. If the character is young and impressionable they'll be large and wide. The older they get, the thinner and smaller they'll appear.#N#For masculine characters, they tend to be more narrow and wider, if they have evil intentions small pupils or none at all to show how detached they are from the world around them. Some masculine characters can also have wide big eyes, but it's mostly geared towards the ones who are bubbly, kind, and most likely loud. Sometimes all three. They're usually young, impressionable and with the whole world ahead of them.#N#If we're drawing older characters, their eyes will typically be smaller, more narrow, and depending on the eye shape, facing downwards.
The best way to start drawing the shape of the eye is with a vague shape. Some small lines to indicate where your brush should move towards when filling in the details. Then continue filling in the details until you are satisfied with the results.
Step 1. Pick out your favorite skin tone and a dense brush (typically set at 100% Opacity) I just used the standard "G - Pen", and color in the area you'd like to paint. Step 2.
Drawing a simple eye is great, but people have emotions, and one of the best ways for the eye to express those emotions is through the eyebrow and upper and lower eyelids. Playing around with those three components will give you different results and a variety of expressions. Types of Eyebrows.
Step 1: Draw three circles the same size, side by side, with the edges touching each other. Step 2: Draw the Iris and the Pupil in the direction you want your eyes to be looking at. Step 3: Add upper eyelids, define the eye, and add the eyebrows.
First, draw a sphere then the eyelids, and finally the iris and the pupil. Make sure to follow the contour of the sphere and to pay attention to the pupil. Depending on the angle, the pupil will appear flat or more towards the back of the eye, if you place it in the front it will look out of place.
Start with a general line, or an empty design, and slowly start to fill it in until you're satisfied with the details. Next up is working on perspective. While it is nice to draw the eyes in just one direction, it is also important to be able to draw the eyes from different angles as well.
Step 1 - Sketch the basic eye shape. Draw the basic shape of your eye, a fat oval. This will act as a guideline for the rest of your eye. Keep your pencil pressure relatively light in case of mistakes. DRAWING TIP: The closer the basic shape is to a circle, the cuter your character will look.
Add the circle inside the eye, and notice that my circle is cut off at the top. If your circle is not cut off at the top (bottom or sides) it can make your character look shocked or wide-eyed. DRAWING TIP: Keep in mind that the larger this circle, the more relaxed or cute your character will look!
Using a light pressure, shade in the sides of the crease near the inner and outer corner of the eye , avoiding the middle. DRAWING TIP: The higher an eyelid, the more relaxed or sleepy a character looks.
To draw serious anime eyes, first draw a horizontal line with a slight curve. Draw a short line coming down off of one end at a 45-degree angle to finish the top of the eye. Then, draw a short horizontal line centered under the first line to make the bottom of the eye. Draw an oval between the two lines to make the iris.
Add 2 circles inside of the iris to show light reflecting off of the eye. Place the circles on opposite sides of the iris, and make one of them twice as big as the other one. Make the biggest circle about ⅕ the size of the iris. The exact placement of the circles will depend on where the light is shining in your drawing.
Sketch a horizontal line that curves up at the ends for the lower eyelid. Place this line underneath the upper eyelid so there’s a gap between them that’s about ⅔ the length of the upper eyelid. Make this line about ½ the length of the upper eyelid, and center it underneath the upper eyelid.
Fill in the iris. You can shade in the iris using your pencil. Just make sure it’s lighter than the pupil. Or, you can choose an eye color and color in the iris instead.
If you’re shading the iris in with your pencil, make sure it’s lighter than the pupil. Leave the 2 circles white. If you’re coloring in your drawing, choose an eye color, like blue, green, or brown, and shade the iris in using that color.
Starting at the right end of the upper eyelid, draw a thick, upward-curving tail that tapers out at the end. Make the tail about ⅕ the length of the upper eyelid. Then, draw another tail that’s the same length directly to the left of the first one. Repeat one more time so you have 3 tails in total.
If you want the light source to be on the left in your drawing, draw the big circle on the left side of the iris and the small circle on the right. If the light is on the right, swap the circles.
