Drawing Anime Clothing Folds
Draw the rolled up parts slightly away from the shape of the legs. The folds in tight jeans will usually be at the sides of the knees and at the very top between the legs. Draw some in those areas. To draw an anime shirt (school uniform or other) once again start by drawing the overall shape of the shirt and it’s major features.
To draw folds in clothing or fabric, you must (1) provide an accurate (and often swiftly simplified) depiction of folds for the viewer, AND (2) through the editorial process, depict them in an arrangement more pleasant to the eye than mere reality. If that sounds good, let’s get going on learning to draw folds.
If you’re a beginner artist start by first drawing a rough sketch of the shape and pose of the body before you draw the clothes (assuming the clothes you are drawing is being worn). For drawing anime bodies see:
Remember that anime clothes kind of has their own lives. Neon Genesis Evangelion is another brilliant example of how clothes look anime. The suits the characters are wearing fit to the world they are living in and the world supports that kind of clothes. It all works together, world and clothes.

The drop fold is created when a cloth hangs freely from an anchor point or an anchor area. Here is an example. This is a simple example of a towel hanging in the air. The only forces affecting it are gravity and the clothespin holding it in place. Remember this rule: folds radiate from the anchor point and outwards.

Ok... So, we'll be working with a robe I suppose. You know how robes tend to have HUGE sleeves that make you want to twirl around? We'll be working with those in this tutorial. Yes, it's meant to be an arm. Ignore the fingers cause this tutorial is about the sleeve. Start by drawing a right triangle for his extended arm. This is used to guild you.
As stated before, the anime style tends to have sharp edges rather than smooth flowing ones. Give the sleeve a few bumps like the ones next to the neck and hand. It's kind of like a letter 'L' sideways or upside-down. Note that not all bumps have to go INTO the fabric. For example, look at the bump second from the hand.
Time to add the flowing cloth at the bottom. Look at the arrow pointing to the flowing fabric. If you're new to the concept of flowing fabric, draw some upside down 'C's. Now to give it some 'depth' or layers so that it doesn't look flat. If the curve of your 'C' goes in deep enough, add a line.
Now to add some smooth folds. Recalling on the second step, there should still be those bumps on top. Find a few bumps you want to work with and stick with them. Let's look at the first bump. It looks quite unnatural to leave it as it is. Since there is gravity applied to the fabric, draw a line to make it look more natural.
Erase the outlines and give it a little more detail. This tutorial will work with almost any piece of flowing fabric. Feel free to experiment with your clothing. Feel free to share your works too! ^ ^ Hope this tutorial was fun and easy!
To draw a sweater in the anime style start by drawing its overall shape . To draw an anime school uniform skirt start once again by drawing its overall shape. Next draw some vertical lines to indicate the proportions of the folds. It’s important to note that the folds in this particular design will be sort of like teeth that point in one direction but slowly curve around. Anime skirt drawing example.
The shoulder areas where the sleeves are stitched to the jacket will stick out be “pointy” while the chest area will be squeezed in. Draw accordingly. In this example the major folds will be at the shoulder (because of the slightly raised arm) and on the inside of the elbow (because the arm is bent).
The folds in tight jeans will usually be at the sides of the knees and at the very top between the legs. Draw some in those areas.
Time, culture, age, hobby, job, way of life. These are some of the most important things you need to keep in mind when drawing and designing clothes for your character. So let’s get going and get deep on what makes clothes anime.
Drawing anime clothing is not an easy task by no means. But the very best advice I can give is to draw the clothes as they live. They have a personality in them. They are slightly in the fantasy world but still connected to reality and to our world.
The diaper fold is the U shape fold. There are two points of tension, one on each side holding the fold up, it sags in the middle creating a U shape. It is the fold found in a hood as it descends down the back. To draw the diaper fold well, follow how the sagging volume moves down from each point of tension.
Inert folds. Inert folds are folds that form when the drapery is thrown to lay on a surface. A fallen piece of cloth that looks still is a good description of inert folds. Think about what has to be represented in the drawing to let the viewer know that the drapery is still. A good drawing of inert fabric will lack even a hint of inertia or momentum. Think of the surface it is on, and work through all the plane changes in the design. The goal is to show to the viewer that this section of cloth is still.
Pipe or cord folds, descend down from a point of support. It is a tubular shape that radiates down. Look for these pipe-like forms in different photographs of drapery, realize what the form is actually like. Since pipe folds are essentially cylindrical in nature, they can be rendered as cylinders. Study these in the context of a complex drapery arrangement.
A half-lock fold sounds confusing but it is really not. It is the fold that happens when fabric changes direction. Most prominent around bending elbows and knees, I like to call it the elbow fold.
Your reference, depending on the fabric, may have twenty radiating spiral folds in an area that you choose by design not to focus on. If you choose to focus somewhere else, this area will need less attention, therefore you’d choose to simplify and show just a few spiral folds instead of all twenty of them.
Folds will usually fan out of a point of tension. These points usually occur on bend knees, inside bent elbows, at shoulders, at glutes, at the pelvis, at the chest , at armpits, and often are created by the costume itself, by a belt, or suspenders. Some more words on points of tension in clothing.
