A common variation of this trope is to make the character close his or her eyes into an arc rather than a simple horizontal line. Characters whose eyes are fixed in that position are generally optimistic and almost always unconditionally happy, but more often down-to-earth instead of ditzy.

The Reilly approach is a constructive/graphic hybrid that emphasizes line and shape design and clear value control. This approach has become popular among professional illustrators as well as for fine art applications.
Place a horizontal mark for the chin underneath the circle. Find the distance from the center of the circle to the line you drew for the nose. Measure down from the bottom of the circle (or the nose line) to the distance you just found and make a small horizontal mark on the vertical center line.
When you’re drawing a young boy or girl character, make the neck lines closer to the chin that the sides of the jaw. Hold your drawing out in front of you to see if the neck looks too long or short while you’re drawing it. Erase or extend the lines further depending on how it looks to you.
If you want to make a simple nose, just put a dot on the point where the nose guide line and the vertical center line intersect.
1. Place ears on the sides of the head between the eye and nose lines. The top and bottom of each ear will line up with the eye and nose lines you drew earlier. Sketch oblong C-shapes between the guide lines for your ears so they connect to the sides of the circle and jawline.
Outline the jaw for your character. Start on either the left or right side of the circle at its widest point. Draw a line from the side of the circle that’s slightly angled toward the vertical center line. Continue drawing the line until you reach the mark you made for the nose.
1. Draw a circle on your paper with a vertical line running through the middle. Use a pencil so you’re able to erase your lines if you make a mistake. Lightly draw the circle in the center of a piece of paper so you have room to add features to it.
For a female character, place the lines for the neck closer to the chin so it’s narrower. Make straight vertical lines extending from the jaw on each side of the face to make the neck. Younger manga or anime characters will have a narrow neck since they aren’t as muscular or defined.
Anime girl ears drawing. To place the ears first draw a horizontal line directly though the middle of the head and then draw another line between that and the chin. Draw the ears between these two lines.
Anime girl face drawing. You can add some very basic shading to your drawing to make it stand out a lot more. Anime uses what is known as “Cel” style shading (basically shading with no gradients) which generally makes shading fair fast and easy. The way the shading is applied will be determined by two things.
Most female anime characters tend to have big eyes, a small mouth, nose and chin and a fairly round face. The lips are usually either very lightly defined or not drawn at all.
The bottom lip will be positioned between the nose and the bottom of the chin. Draw the mouth itself slightly above that.
Start by drawing a sphere, I always start with this basic shape to establish a large portion of the skull. This method of drawing heads works very well at most angles and I highly recommend learning to draw these.
When drawing the head at odd angles, getting the centerline down becomes very important. We will be using this line to inform the placement of the features and the side of the head.
Now we will add a circle that represents the side of the head (where the ears would go).
Add two parallel lines at the front of the circle that curves slightly to match the curvature of the sphere.
Add in the chin lower down on the centerline that we drew earlier, connect this line up towards the eye socket to establish the cheek on the far side.
Connect the chin to the vertical line we drew in the last step to finish up the jaw. If you want a more feminine jaw you can make this more curved or keep it more jagged with straight lines to make it more masculine. Think of how traditional superheroes are drawn with box-like jaws versus females with rounded jaws.
Add a cylinder for the neck and add some shading to give the drawing a bit more dimension.
