If we were to draw formal or office wear, the first thing you’ll need to do is create a rough sketch of the clothes. Use light lines to sketch the shirt and the trousers. Add noticeable details to the sketch using light lines. At this stage, you’re going to draw the collar, necktie, and add a belt to the outfit.
When drawing girl clothes, you have to account for the shape of the female body. For this tutorial, we’re going to sketch an anime skirt and blouse.
The skirt should have some pleats at the bottom, and the shirt should have a collar and some cuffs. You can also add a necktie or scarf if you want. Trace the shirt and the skirt with dark lines. Add some folds to make them look realistic. You can also include some additional details in this stage.
In this final stage, you’re going to use uniform hatching to fill in the contours and add shadows to the outfit. Male bodies are straight and angular, while female bodies have an hourglass type of shape. The clothes you draw will have different folds and wrinkles depending on the body shape of the character.
For instance, you can dress them up in uniform if you’re going for a schoolgirl or schoolboy look. You can even go for pajamas, formal wear, or ninja clothes depending on the background stories you create for your characters.
Now that you’ve cleaned up the drawing, you’ll need to outline the contours inside the collar, the shirt, the inner part of the sleeves, a little around the pockets, and slightly around the middle area of the pants.
You can add the cuffs, seams, pockets, and pleats. Remember to add some folds as well. If you opted to use guidelines during the first stage, make sure you get rid of them before you add some shadows to the clothing. However, you can proceed to the next step if you didn’t use any guidelines.
Whenever you are drawing clothes for an anime character, remember where the character is placed on? Time, culture, age, hobby, job, way of life. These are some of the most important things you need to keep in mind when drawing and designing clothes for your character.
When I draw the clothing, I keep in mind the flow of the pose and the flow of the hair. I try to bring as much dynamism to the clothes as possible.
As discussed before, you want to make the clothes support the character. Think about Darling In The FranXX anime series.
Ribbons, backpacks, jackets, and accessories that represent cute things emphasize the feeling of cute clothing.
Whereas male clothing can be seen as rigid, I would say those drawing cute clothes is at the other end of the spectrum.
It’s weird, but I think there’s a certain style in place when drawing anime clothes. Like, the clothes are based on reality and all, but there’s this small twist in them. It’s hard to explain, so I do my best here.
Drawing anime clothing is not an easy task by no means. But the very best advice I can give is to draw the clothes as they live. They have a personality in them. They are slightly in the fantasy world but still connected to reality and to our world.
1. Choose suitable clothing. Consider what you are capable of drawing as well as how you would like your anime girl to appear. Also keep in mind the personality of the character - a girl who's meant to be dark and mysterious isn't going to be wearing a bunch of frills!
Know how clothes work on female figures. Clothes are influenced by the body's size and shape. For example, if a small girl were to put on a sweater several sizes too big for her, it would be evident as the sleeves would be hanging off her hands. Chests can also influence the clothing - a large chest size could cause a shirt to not fit properly, requiring a larger size for the girl.
Use shading techniques to give your folds a 3-D effect. You could also study the folds of real clothing and try to copy what you see.
If your girl is a gamer, somewhat of a loner, or just values being comfortable over looking nice, try dressing her in baggy clothes, such as an oversized sweater or shirt and a pair of loose jeans, or an oversized skirt with a baggy top. Shoes that go well with this type of style are brand-name sneakers, such as Converse or Vans.
Make sure that the ends of the strands of hair are sharp. This will make it look more realistic.
Gym uniforms tend to be solid color, usually something such as black or navy blue. The summer gym uniform typically consists of a pair of gym shorts and a short-sleeved gym shirt. The winter uniforms will usually be longer and have a jacket. Depending on the school, the uniform may have the owner's name written on it in kanji or katakana. However, katakana is usually reserved for students with foreign names.
When clothes or clothing material wrap a person's body they will always show marks to indicate they are covering an object with multiple shapes, movements, or attachments. These marks are what we call wrinkles. Learn about typical clothing material. The type of material used influences the appearance of clothes.

If the shirt is fairly tight and has short sleeves as in the example you only need to draw a few folds. Draw some folds below and above the chest. In this example there is also one fold going across the stomach are to show that the shirt is being lightly stretched in one direction because of the light bend in the body. You can also draw some folds in the upper stomach area for the same reason.
Start by drawing the overall shape of the sweater or sweatshirt with the outline of the major curves and folds. Baggy clothes will tend to hand downwards and collect at the bottom. Keep this in mind when drawing.
