The series was produced as a part of a commemoration project to mark the 40th anniversary of Yoshida's debut as a manga artist.
At this point the Banana Fish anime and the Banana Fish manga can be seen as two different things but still part of the same series. Also, Shorter is bald in the manga, so if that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will. Shorter's character design is modeled after a famous Japanese singer Sunplaza Nakano, so he is bald in the manga. And I think that It was probably troublesome for Yoshida to draw Shorter's Mohawk, considering her personality.

For one, the art style in the manga develops and changes a lot. It was a long running manga do of course the art style changes, but it makes such a drastic change and it's really interesting to compare the start art style and see it gradually evolve to what the anime took some features of.
