Erwin's death in Attack on Titan Season 3 was a staggering loss, but in some ways, it was actually a blessing in disguise. By Nicole Waxman Published Feb 24, 2021. Share.
Erwin Smith was Attack on Titan 's archetypal hero character. He was pure-hearted and fought for justice and peace, which made him an exemplary leader for the Survey Corps. He seemed like the natural choice to inherit the Colossal Titan, so it was a shocker when Levi ultimately chose Armin.
Because Levi held Erwin in such high regard, there's no doubt that his morals and presence loom over Levi as he conducts his missions with the Scouts. If no one else, Levi is the perfect person to carry out Erwin's way of thinking.
Erwin wouldn't have gone along with Eren and Zeke's plan; he was too pure-hearted to ever sacrifice hundreds of innocent lives, even if they were Marleyans. Had Erwin been saved and given the Colossal Titan, he most likely would have wholeheartedly disagreed with using the Titan for any purpose.
But Ewin wouldn't have been able to be his true self in the world of Season 4. Being a real hero isn't possible when there are this many lives on the line and every choice can make or break an entire nation. Erwin was excellent at leading his regiment and always guiding them down the right path, but there doesn't seem to be one right path for the relations of Marley and Paradis. It's likely that Erwin would have struggled against his own morals and found it difficult to make choices he wholeheartedly believed in.

He wanted Erwin to reach his dream of seeing Grisha Yeager's basement, and nearly injected him with the serum because of Erwin's talent to lead.
This was especially true for Levi who, after being entrusted with the lone Titan serum injection, was forced to make a terrible decision as to who to save and transform into a Titan and save their lives. After much discussion and fighting, Levi made his choice.
Attack on Titan 's staff warned fans ahead of the latest episode, and it turns out this was with good cause as Episode 55 turned out to be one of the most emotionally tumultuous episodes in the series to date. This was especially true for Levi who, after being entrusted with the lone Titan serum injection, was forced to make a terrible decision as to who to save and transform into a Titan and save their lives. After much discussion and fighting, Levi made his choice.
Erwin was a complex character, portrayed as serious, calculating, and always planning far in the future. While he trusted his men, he was the first to realize that there was a spy interfering with the Survey Corps, and was able to come up with a reasonable criteria to determine which of his soldiers to trust with vital information, and which to keep in the dark. An eloquent speaker, Erwin was able to sway many people, such as the military tribunal held to judge Eren and the trainees into choosing which recruitment branches to join.
Erwin apologizes to Eren for Levi's treatment of him before commending him for unwittingly giving them the perfect argument to convince the military to turn him over to the corps, formally welcoming him to the Survey Corps. Erwin asks Eren who the real enemy is in order to gauge his reaction.
An eloquent speaker, Erwin was able to sway many people, such as the military tribunal held to judge Eren and the trainees into choosing which recruitment branches to join. Erwin was often seen as a very grim individual. He accepted all news, good or bad, mockery or praise, with the same stoic attitude.
Erwin always wore a calm and collected expression on his face, with his icy blue eyes being one of his most striking features. His eyebrows were also quite noticeable, being very thick and bushy. Erwin typically dressed in the standard military uniform, donning the Survey Corps ' signature green cape when on missions.
Large chunks of the Titan fly into the air and Erwin calls for his soldiers to finish it off, since the Titan will regenerate if the nape is not destroyed and the size is still the same one meter long and ten centimeters wide even on a Titan of this size.
Because of the expedition's failure, Erwin is summoned to the capital to hand over Eren. Before they depart for the capital, Armin shares his suspicion with Erwin that Annie Leonhart is the Female Titan. Erwin orders her covert capture en route to the meeting.
He asked why humanity had no memory of what happened before they lived within the Walls, because even if they had lost all their records, the first generation should have been able to teach their children. His father shared a theory with him that the king had altered humanity's memories when they first entered the Walls so he could control them better. Too innocent to realize why his father would not discuss this in the classroom, Erwin shared it with the other kids in town, which resulted in his father's "accidental" death, arranged by the Military Police Brigade's First Interior Squad.
But all good things must end, and Erwin takes critical injuries when he leads a charge against the Beast Titan to distract it in an all-or-nothing gambit to save the city. Dying slowly, Erwin's last moments are compounded by a chance to be saved by Levi and the Titan Serum. But Levi is faced with an impossible decision as Armin had also suffered from horrific burning by the Colossal Titan. In this moment, Levi chooses Armin and sees Erwin die from his wounds.
Shocked to find Eren's mother, Carla, crushed underneath their destroyed home, the two kids tried to save her. However, Hannes tried and failed to save Carla, taking the children away as they witnessed Carla get eaten by the Smiling Titan.
What Eren learns is that Grisha isn't from Paradis, but a different country that creates Titans. Eren also learns that Grisha was a Titan himself, and had eaten the holder of the Coordinate, a member of the Reiss Royal Family. What he did after that though is most shocking.
Hannes does make up for it though when the Survey Corps fails and retreats from a Titan attack.
However, it turned out that the only reason Reiner was accepted was because Porco's brother, Marcel, sabotaged him in order to protect him.
His death however was a shocking moment in the series mainly because of what we learned at that moment. Surrounded by a group of titans, he learns too little too late that the Beast Titan is capable of intelligent speech and control over other titans, and is asked a few questions by the Beast Titan.
Then they died horrifically. What was most shocking about the death of the entire squad was how they all went. On their first mission protecting Eren, the Female Titan (Annie) attacked them. The soldiers seemed to have defeated her at first, but they underestimated her power and were brutally killed.
As we have explained in the introduction, Eren Yeager is one of the protagonists of Attack on Titan, and a character that was, by most, viewed as the ultimate hero of the franchise, someone who would end the dystopian tyranny of Isayama’s world. And while his path was, for the most part, heroic, it had a tragic turn towards the end.
Now, in order to properly understand how and why Eren died in Attack on Titan, we have to tell you his whole story, since his character evolution plays a crucial role in understanding what happens to him.

Erwin attends the military's tribunal to determine what to do with Eren Jaeger, proposing to the military's premier Dhalis Zachary that the boy be entrusted to the Scout Regiment so that his powers can be used to reclaim Wall Maria. In the middle of the trial Eren loses his temper, prompting Levi to beat him in front of everyone to prove that he can be controlled. Seizing the opportunity, Erwin promises that he will station Eren under Levi if he is allowed to join the scouts, ensuring that he will be kept under control. Additionally, to keep Walls' civilians calm, he agrees to hand Eren over to the Military Police if the boy proves to be a failure on his first scouting mission. Satisfied with Erwin's proposal, Zachary hands Eren over to the scouts.
