I played entire .hack//G.U. without watching the anime and I didn't lose anything from the plot so I'll confirm that it's OK to skip it. .hack Roots spoils a huge plot twist with an important character near the end. If you don't mind that I'd recommend it. It has one of the best anime soundtracks out there imo.
Right from PlayStation 2, the .hack series has received quite a lot of praise and anime adaptations owing to it’s engaging and complex storyline. If you aren’t a gamer, but you are a weeb, you definitely will enjoy watching this series.
It's definitely worth checking out before you finish because there are a couple of returning characters from Roots that show up in the game and it's way more involving/cool if you've watched the anime.
It has one of the best anime soundtracks out there imo. Edit: I would say it's fine to watch it after you finish Vol 2. I wouldn't suggest watching it before then if spoilers bother you. Isnt it only the .hack GU 3d animation movie thingy that spoils it. If I remember correctly the .hack roots anime is pretty much the prequel to the first volume.
