Anime has been increasing in popularity over the year, and though Japan is the biggest player in the industry, other countries have began to test the waters.
Thank you for the request. Anime has been very popular in South Korea among normally kids and some adults. Especially aged South Koreans have thought animations are for children, not something for adults to watch. But, it’s much less among youngers and present 20s don’t care.
South Korea does produce anime but it is not necessarily called anime. This ‘anime’ is different from Japanese anime because it comes from their manhwa’s and are, obviously, in Korean. There may be many other differences but these are the main ones that I know of. Why aren't Chinese and Korean animes/manhuas popular?
But the animation market in South Korea is much smaller than that of Japan. South Korean animation is called “한국 애니 (hanguk aeni [hanguk̚ eni])” in Korean casual name, and it’s the abbriviation of “한국 애니메이션 (hanguk aenimeisyeon: Korean animation).”
There are some korean anime but not many, it's called manhwa(만화) which means a cartoon or animation, and not as popular as Japanese anime. Actually the anime Winter Sonata is based on a Korean soap series also called Winter sonata which itself runs for about 20 to 25 episodes and had been created as anime also.
