Hamburgirl Z idol group want you to buy burgers. Jpop is a broad term that refers to Japanese pop music, or even popular Japanese music (Covington, 2014). As much fun as a catchy, silly pop song is, a more interesting phenomenon in Japan is the idea of “idol pop”, music by pop idols, sometimes called aidoru.
These shows are basically soap operas which tend to focus around what it means to be part of that industry. Funnily enough, the sports anime Basquash (2009) had a group of three side characters who were part of an idol group, but it was not the main part of the story. The series’ focused solely on a large group of idols seemed to have come later.
Nakamori argued that the phenomenon has grown to such an extent that idols are the main face of Japanese culture. In recent years this phenomenon has gained the interest of scholars for their profitability, as Japan is one of the world’s top media consumers.
Other idol groups are nearly indistinguishable from normal pop artists, like Perfume who is made up of three members or Momoiro Clover Z who are well known for the Sailor Moon Crystal theme song, or more recently, Babymetal. They don’t have to be in a group either.
Beyond these iconic tracks, however, is the note-worthy fact that so many of our favorite idols are avid fans of anime themselves! Bingeing anime can be a great source of comfort and entertainment for us media consumers and K-Pop idols are ultimately no exception.
Yeri A lover of anime with her favorite also being Full Moon. She says that this anime-inspired her to become an idol.
The main similarity is the hair (although that only extends to anime males and male idols). A lot of Korean idols will dye their hair bright unnatural colours, much like an anime character's. looks maybe and depending on the character personalities vary.

“Magazines, radio, above all television: in whatever direction one turns, the barely (and thus ambiguously) pubescent woman is there both to promote products and purchase them, to excite the consumer and herself be thrilled by the flurry of goods and services that circulate like toys around her.”.

From the 70s the output of artists was rapid. In the 80’s there were so many idol groups making debuts in Japan that the decade is often referred to as the “Golden age of Idols”, with the artists staying relevant by making numerous television, commercial and movie appearances.
The first idol group recruitment agency was Johny & Associates in 1963 and these were aimed toward males as well as females (Covington, 2014). The timing was perfect since half of Japanese households had a television in the 1960s.
Not only did AKB48 start off aiming their songs toward anime fans by dressing up in sailor suits and cat ears (The Eternal Student, 2013), but both have young and cute girls. This is not dismissing the squealing fans for the male idol groups though.
I think so, from what I've seen. Often j-pop idols don't appear to be as polished with their choreographies as k-pop idols. K-pop dance so heavily focuses on synchronization, so it tends to look better. And in order to get everyone so synchronized, the dance training must be rigorous.
It depends on the agency. 48/46 group members don't really receive training (as far as I know). However, compare them to LDH dancers and you will see the difference (though you can debate whether LDH's dancers are really 'idols'). Momoiro Clover Z's dances even incorporate gymnastics and ballet. The J-Pop industry is very diverse.
It's just different industries and requirements to be an idol in both places.
Jpop idols usually learn on the job. Japanese agencies don't have the same pre-debut system as Korean agencies so if an idol debuts with good dance skills its usually because they've been dancing for a long time as part of a dance school or academy. The most skilled dancers almost always have prior dance experience.
What Kpop fans don't understand when it comes to Japan is being an idol, not just singing, dancing and making music. They send their idols to television, radio and sports programs to introduce themselves to the society. Kamenashi Kazuya, for example, is a radio host, sports show host, musical lead actor, actor, songwriter, and a singer.
there's a reason why it was called produce48 aka "produce 101 + AKB48"
Thanks a lot for all the detailed infos and links. LDH groups' skills are impressive. I understand now why Shotaro is such a good dancer.
