In Japan, people tend to not be very open about their hobbies, especially if there's a perception that they'll be frowned upon. Home and work life are kept very separate, and so those who are otaku end up living something of a double life.
So, yes, anime is popular in Japan. However, it wouldn't be so surprising if we were to find out that Japanese people often ask, why is Disney so popular in America? These would be good questions. Yet, we know, living here, that, really, not everyone likes or even watches Disney Shows.
It's a social thing, though not as much as it used to be. Anime fans still have the reputation of being socially awkward people. In Japanese culture the people still rely a lot on social standing, so being an anime fan is something they'd rather not admit out in the open.
According to a survey conducted by the Nippon Research Center in October 2019, around 33 percent of people in Japan stated that they often read manga or watch anime. A slightly higher share of 41 percent of people said that they do not often engage in this pastime.
Responses were gathered from 1,041 Line-using high school students (520 boys and 521 girls) who were asked, “How often do you watch anime?” When the results were tallied, the majority, 54 percent, said they watch anime at least once a week, and nearly one in four said they watch anime at least four times a week.
Anime, for most japanese, is nothing more than a form of entertainement. They dont think much of it, the problems they may have with it, video games or anything really, is the same any sane person shall have: deviant uses of the medium.

As we've covered, otakus are enthusiasts of all things anime. Weebs, on the other hand, have a wider scope of interests specifically related to Japanese culture. The word “otaku” is also more commonly used in Japan, whereas “weeb” is directly related to non-Japanese individuals.

Anime seen on the Cartoon Network (or other channels that show children's cartoons) before 9pm is probably safe for most children younger than 13. If it is on after 9pm, then you know it isn't appropriate for children younger than 13.
