Noé is the narrator of The Case Study of Vanitas, and the series as a whole is composed of his memoirs on why he killed Vanitas. The sole survivor of the Archiviste Clan, Noé has no memories of any of his biological family.
The details behind this situation have not been revealed yet, but Vanitas, thinking Mikhail is dead, kills Luna because they had become a curse bearer. Luna seemed to be aware of their curse and made Vanitas promise to never let someone see his memories.
Vanitas is able to reassure Mikhail that this isn't the case, but he still refuses to join his former foster brother, stating that he would rather die because of Noe - likely a cruel foreshadowing, given that Noe kills Vanitas in the end - or so he says.
The two were subjected to inhumane experimentation in hopes of turning them into vampires, all to no avail. Eventually, it was revealed they had received the blood of the Vampire of the Blue Moon, being the only human subjects not to reject it.

So far, Jeanne and Vanitas are not officially together, though this could change in the future! Of course, given that the opening episodes spoils the ending for us, this could also take tragic proportions very soon.
Jeanne is also known as the Hellfire Witch, which already suggests she's not to be messed with! Like most vampires, she has enhanced speed, endurance, and strength, and she's strongest than most due to her combat training, leaving the two main characters impressed after their first encounter.

In an interview with Tetsuya Nomura as well as various novelizations of the game, it is revealed that this similarity is due to Sora's heart connecting with Ventus near the beginning of the game, and had anyone else connected with Ventus's heart, Vanitas would look like that person.
Unlike most vampires, who were born under the Crimson Moon, Vanitas was born under the Blue Moon- a great taboo which divided them from their people. As Vanitas was shunned, they declared revenge against their people, and eventually created The Book of Vanitas.

Rumors revolving around The Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation, draw Noé, a young vampire in search of a friend's salvation, to Paris. What awaits him in the City of Flowers, however, is not long hours treading the pavement or rifling through dusty bookshops in search of the tome.
Oh where to begin. My simple review is: It was made for people who haven't read the manga. The story was lacking. In the best way, it was too soft. Vanitas' issues were downplayed. Especially during the ball and he was reduced to "Silly looking Vani wants to play doctor." It's supposed to be bread crumbs. A slow fall. Important things were dropped.

For her next work after Pandora Hearts, Jun Mochizuki wanted to draw vampires in a high school setting. Vanitas was the first character she created during a trip to France. While sightseeing in Mont Saint-Michel, she mused on drawing the story of a single vampire who had watched over an island for about a hundred years. Everything else about The Case Study of Vanitas came from that one idea, and the general forms of Vanitas and Noé were born there. There were multiple things …
