As any otaku would know, media with extended stories such as RPGs, light novels, and visual novels always face the risk of shortened narratives when adapted into movies or anime. Unfortunately, Corpse Party and its major set of 20-hour-plus games meant that the anime suffered the same restrictions.
It’s natural for players to expect quite the gory experience from a horror game named Corpse Party. However, with a backstory involving students and a school named Heavenly Host, the gore just quadrupled the horror. Anime viewers might feel the adaptation overdid the gore a bit.
Akin to other ambiance-heavy horror titles such as Silent Hill, Corpse Party heavily relied on both gameplay and environments to frighten audiences. Unlike the anime, which struggled to scare through its sped-up scripts, the gameplay of Corpse Party itself meshed well with its environments to frighten players.
Contrary to other survival-horror titles, Corpse Party is largely a horror adventure title. In addition to scaring with the background, the heavy emphasis on exploration did a great deal to help solidify each Corpse Party game’s horror potential.
In both the anime and the games, Corpse Party remains a story about friendship. The irony of the game's prologue itself, that of students being trapped in their school after a ritual of “always being together,” is emphasized throughout each game’s story.
It’s natural for the Corpse Party adaptation to get straight to the point with the game’s story. Unfortunately, while it did tell the Corpse Party story in a straightforward manner, its pacing didn’t help “sell” the story.
As a horror game set in Japan, it’s natural for fans to expect the game to have horror tropes unique to Japan. While the long-haired spirit has been a staple in Japanese horror, the “haunted school” trope remains multicultural. As such, Corpse Party in itself is unsettling from the get-go due to its premise: being trapped in a haunted school.
About Corpse Party: Tortured Souls. “Corpse Party: Tortured Souls” is the anime adaptation of the infamous horror video game “Corpse Party.”. Taking horror to the next level, this evolved into the manga and anime platform in order to bring the fear to more people. Personally, I think this is one of the best horror anime you could find out there.
And they are correct! Blood-C is one of the bloodiest horror anime shows out there. And to top all that, it also is one of the most brutal!
A crazy school, deranged students, mystery, and senseless killings—sounds a lot like Corpse Party, right? But well, “Danganronpa: The Animation” isn’t exactly a horror anime but it’s horrifying in its own ways. After all, this show embodies the true meaning of DESPAIR!
And while “Gakkou Gurashi!” is not as intense and extreme as Corpse Party, it still does creep and horrify with its cruelty-based reality setting and unstable mentality approach. Megurigaoka Private High School is the beloved school of Yuki Takeya. She loves it so much that she never wants to leave.
