Pocket MonstersPokémon is short for “Pocket Monsters", the original Japanese name. The franchise has its roots in a gaming magazine in the early 1980s in Japan—Game Freak, started by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori. Tajiri was the writer, while Sugimori was the illustrator.
It is not a sequel like Black 2 and White 2 were to Black and White, so it can be fully enjoyed without having any knowledge of Sun and Moon. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that since Sun and Moon have a very unfinished feeling to them, it is probably better to not play them before Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

In X and Y, Ash was more mature and gradually evolving into a full grown adult but in Sun and Moon he is shown to be a ten year old again. This really puts forward few confusions along the way regarding where does Sun and Moon actually fit in the Pokemon timeline.
The main reason why Sun & Moon is so bad, is the art style . Here’s a side by side comparison of XYZ (which had the best art style out of any Pokemon series) and Sun & Moon. As you can see, Sun & Moon is more cartoony than any Pokemon series before it. Pretty sad when the fan art is better than the real series.
When Serena left Kalos, she went to Hoenn to practise her performances, while Ash went to Alola. It is possible that she will appear in a different region than Hoenn or Kalos, considering Dawn made a re-appearance in the Black and White series (in Unova) and Misty and Brock have returned in the Sun and Moon series.
In the Sun and Moon world, Ash never has traveled throughout the regions and his starting journey is in Alola. So you can consider Sun and Moon’s events to be a branch out of the original timeline. However, it will be interesting to see the approach of the creators once this series comes to an end. Dibyendu Ghatak.
If Ash and Serena do meet again, they’ll probably meet in a new region , when Ash moves away from Alola, since he’s never revisited a region before , with the obvious exception of Kanto . Hope this answers your question, and remember this is my opinion, not confirmed by the anime producers. Related Answer.
In the Sun and Moon world, Ash never has traveled throughout the regions and his starting journe. Continue Reading. Chronologically, Sun and Moon is after X and Y but the massive change in the appearance of Ash really contradicts a few things.
In series order, it comes after. However, the SM Ash isn’t really similar to Ash from previous series, so I’m pretty sure that it really comes down to alternate universes, something that was explained in the games that came before Sun and Moon: Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

He appears to the player character as the man running the Poké Pelago but is given some form of closure in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon when he returns to Lusamine with no memory of his family or past life.
9 Perfect: Mimikyu's Growth. Over the course of the series run, Jesse's Mimikyu had a unique relationship with Ash's Pikachu that hadn't been seen by Pokémon before, particularly with other Mimikyu. There had been instances of jealousy between Pokémon for how one is liked more than another, but Mimikyu took it to a whole new level ...
The mask flew off of his face by accident while he helped Ash deal with an Ultra Beast invasion.
As Alola is shown to be quite far away from Kanto, Ash's home region, it makes sense that his Alolan Pokém on would be better equipped to stay with Kukui instead of Oak, but it also means they won't be able to bond with the rest of Ash's Pokémon.
Ash has a long history of releasing his Pokémon when they are needed for something greater than battling, from his beloved Butterfree to the infamous Greninja release. Naganadel is a bit of a unique situation for Ash, as he has released it on more than one occasion.
