Cobain frequently criticised Pearl Jam, believing that they had simply adopted the aesthetics of the underground scene when they cottoned on to its popularity. In his eyes, they lacked originality and were little more than a commercial rock band dressed up in ripped jeans and leather jackets.
Inspired by Black Sabbath, and punk rock bands like Black Flag, by 1986 they had formed Nirvana and two years later moved to Seattle to record their first single with Sub Pop.

Close to 17 years ago, Kurt Cobain died. Conspiracy theories about his death abound — as they tend to do with people of note — but most agree it was Cobain’s own decision to end his life.
Cobain's autopsy revealed that he had died a couple of days before his body was found, and the official date of death was April 5, 1994. The toxicology report stated that Cobain had a high concentration of heroin in his system at the time of his death that measured 1.52 milligrams per liter. The autopsy report also noted old needle tracks on Cobain's arm, as well new puncture wounds.

It was August bank holiday weekend and rumours had been circulating that Kurt and his wife Courtney Love, who'd just given birth to Frances Bean, were deeply unwell. In response, he came on stage in a wheelchair, wearing a hospital gown and a blond wig, sticking two fingers up at the music press.
Lana Del Rey, Blink-182, Justin Timberlake and Jay Z have all quoted Nirvana songs in their own lyrics, while Weezer once played an entire concert of Nirvana covers. "Cobain changed the course of where the music went," said Vernon Reid of rock band Living Colour.

Nirvana decided they'd rather not, thanks all the same. Instead, Kurt sang Smells Like Teen Spirit in a much lower voice, changed some of the lyrics and barely touched his guitar. The rest of the band performed in a similar vein, emphasising the fact they were very much not playing it live. image copyright.
In particular Cobain was troubled by having his audiences filled with people who didn’t share his values. Cobain even put this sense of unease into his lyrics. He's the one. Who like all our pretty songs. And he likes to sing along. And he likes to shoot his gun. But he don't know what it means.
In the end Cobain’s attitude towards his audience was merely a symptom of the mental health issues which would eventually claim his life in early 1994. Even his suicide note refereed to how he was “faking it onstage” and how unfair that was on his audience.
From what I know of Cobain, he suffered from depression. He may have been passionate about his music in the beginning, but the depression as well as fame rendered him vulnerable to situations, addictions, and people he should have stayed away from, and he was unable to make good choices.
Nirvana’s forth album ‘In Utero’ (1993) was written and recorded to be very different from Nevermind in an attempt to shrink the bands audience back to something Cobain was more comfortable with.
Cobain’s response to this was a mix of gratitude that the band could now earn a good living from music and a sense of unease that his audience was no longer the ‘alternative’ crowd but was infact the same music fans who would attend Guns n’Roses and Bon Jovi shows.

Kurt Cobain rather famously struggled with the mainstream success his band Nirvana achieved after releasing Nevermind in 1991. He had fully embraced his bands earlier identity as part of the ‘alternative’ movement and clearly seemed to feel a sense of belonging to that particular musical sub-culture.
As the frontman of grunge pioneers Nirvana, he brought poetry and fragility to the drug-laced world of early 90s rock’n’roll, creating an anthem for a generation in 1991’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, and cultivating a devoted fan following whose reaction to his suicide in April 1994 was utter devastation. Twenty years on, this shows no sign of abating, so, around the anniversary of his death, we look back on this fascinating man, and consider some of the more unusual facets of his life.
