Comedy Central has had a rough go since announcing an adult-targeted Ren & Stimpy reboot last August. The news was met with a tepid response from the industry, followed by a petition to halt the series, owing to the accusations of child abuse against the show's creator John Kricfalusi.
Kricfalusi was accused of the sexual abuse of two minors in 2018. In a report first published by Buzzfeed, a woman named Robyn Byrd shared a detailed account of alleged sexual abuse she endured at the hands of Kricfalusi when she was a teenager. She claimed that she first contacted Kricfalusi when she was 13 in 1994.

The Ren & Stimpy Show is one of Nickelodeon's first original animated series—known as "Nicktoons"—alongside Rugrats and Doug. In contrast with other shows on the network, it has generated controversy for its dark humor, sexual innuendos, adult humor, violence, and shock value.
The Ren and Stimpy Show first appealed to viewers because it was funny, irreverent, and so remarkably different from anything else airing at the time. The series harkened back (“Hark hark, harkened he”) to the 'toons that had made animation popular in the first place.
Man's Best Friend: Banned from airing due to scenes of brutal violence, cigar references, and scatological jokes. This episode wouldn't air on TV until TNN/Spike TV aired the episode as an unofficial premiere of Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon" and with a TV-MA rating.

She told herself that Kricfalusi was helping to launch her career; in the end, she fled animation to get away from him. Since October, a national reckoning with sexual assault and harassment has not only felled dozens of prominent men, but also caused allegations made in the past to resurface.
Creators of shows including SpongeBob SquarePants, Adventure Time, and Rick and Morty have cited Ren & Stimpy as an influence. After Nickelodeon fired the perpetually behind-schedule artist from Ren & Stimpy in 1992, he became an early proponent of art and shows made just for the internet.
It’s the same image he presented to Byrd and Rice, and to many of the fans, mostly men in their twenties, who he hired at Spumco in the 1990s and early 2000s. They were inexperienced young people who, Mora and Swarr said, believed deeply in the art Spumco was making.
In emails, Kricfalusi demanded her professional loyalty. He also continued to pressure her for affection. Through a lawyer, Kricfalusi denied harassing Rice, saying, "John's avid pursuit of her romantically was all after the company went out of business and he was no longer her employer.".
