Though it's tangentially related to the mecha classic Macross, Southern Cross failed due to bad designs, a rushed production and a lack of toys. Many anime fans still fondly remember the series Macross from back in the 1980s, or perhaps they've seen the numerous sequels it's spawned.
The series lasted for 23 episodes. The three titles share some of the same creators, and Macross is referenced by character cameos and inside references by the latter two series. However, the basic stories are unrelated.
The Macross producers treat Macross II: Lovers Again as a parallel world story due to the absence of Studio Nue's input on this part of the Macross universe.
Sean Phillips, the Casanova of the 15th Squad, visits Marie Crystal, who is recuperating from wounds suffered in battle. Lieutenant Crystal attempts a little reverse psychology to ensure the private's attention and wonders later if she's overplayed her hand.
Louie (after being knocked over by Dana as she runs to the simulators): "I know she has personal problems, but I wish that she wouldn't take them out on me..."
2089 - 80 years have passed since Space War I changed the lives of both human and Zentraedi races. Both races are at peace on Earth when a new alien race called the "Marduk" appear within the Solar System. While covering the first battle between the U.N. Spacy and the Marduk fleet, SNN rookie reporter Hibiki Kanzaki discovers Ishtar, an "Emulator" that enhances the Marduk's combat abilities through singing. Hibiki brings Ishtar to Earth to teach her the values of life and culture. Together with ace Valkyrie pilot Silvie Gena, Hibiki and Ishtar must find a way to save Earth from total destruction at the hands of the Marduk leader Ingues.
The Macross producers treat Macross II: Lovers Again as a parallel world story due to the absence of Studio Nue's input on this part of the Macross universe. Although Studio Nue originally created and developed Macross, Big West owned the rights because it was the financial backer; so it licensed and created Macross II without Studio Nue's consultation (thus the DVDs credit to Studio Nue simply for design inspiration and association). The original series creators, such as Shoji Kawamori, Kenichi Matsuzaki and Ichiroh Itano did not work on it.
The Nousjadeul-Ger's primary weapon is a large plasma cannon mounted across the back engine mount, capable of being swiveled forward and ready to fire very quickly. In short range battle, the suit is equipped with a torso mounted impact cannon and can carry a variety of small arms in either (or both) of the hands.
Meeting the need for a powered battle suit in the male division of the Zentradi army, the Nousjadeul-Ger is a functional if unremarkable mecha. The battle suit is operated by a single pilot and possesses a small armament with just enough weapons diversity to match most foes.
