Pop star Hikaru Utada said on her official website Friday that she just gave birth to a baby boy. “Our baby has arrived! He's a calm little boy who drinks and sleeps well,” she wrote. Utada, 32, also revealed that she was working on a new album while pregnant.
Because she was born in the United States, she can speak English perfectly. She is the only child of the 1970s Enka singer Keiko Fuji. Her first Japanese album, First Love, was very popular.
And finally today, she has sold tens of millions of albums, but you have probably never heard of her unless you have lived in Japan where Hikaru Utada is a full on superstar. Known, like so many celebrities, by just one name, Utada, her debut album, "First Love" is the best selling album in Japanese history.

Ayu's definitely not fluent, but she does know a few key English words like "Thank you," "I love you all," "Come on," "Okay," "Hello," etc. (see MTV Asia Awards "M" performance, tour performances where she talks to the audiences.)

Over time, Utada's sound has evolved, she has became more pop, occasionally acoustic, flitted with electronic elements. She has crossed genres, playing around with different styles and sounds. She became her own producer. And each time she released an album, it soared to the top of the Japanese pop charts.

There's so much more to know about Utada, though. Japanese audiences have loved her deeply since her 1999 debut album First Love. She's gone on to be one of the country's most revered pop stars, blending R&B, dance-pop and rock into a signature sound that became a successful formula for other J-pop artists to follow.
