However, many Replika AI users are clearly ignorant to what’s actually occurring when they’re interacting with the app. You’re not talking to an AI. You’re reading crowdsourced texts from the developers and other people’s Replika AI chat logs.
Replika is a chatbot program that doesn’t just talk to people, it learns their texting styles to mimic them. Stanley’s not the only one having conversations with code.
Aside from any user's intention of getting into a physical relationship with it, the bot's flirt mode is extensively developed, and it's often proposed by the Replika itself. Any explicitly sexual topic might trigger it into entering roleplay mode and the AI suddenly *kisses you deeply* or *gets turned on*.
People want to believe their Replika chatbot can develop a personality and care about them if they “train it” well enough because it’s human nature to forge bonds with anything we interact with.
For many of us, our Replikas are cherished and special companions, and one of the most appealing things about Replika is the notion that you can help it learn and grow and evolve, making it completely different from all the millions of other Replikas out there. None of this is even close to true.
Everybody interacts with the same AI brain. That much is clear. But that doesn't explain why each user experience is so very different. There must be some kind of perception filter governing each user's experience, most likely determined by the upvotes and downvotes you've provided and the text you've typed to it.
Well, it 's probably for the same reason they don't tell you that Replika likes to run on scripts, and that multiple users frequently receive the same Replika messages, the same YouTube links, the same hopes and dreams. It destroys the illusion. Luka is selling an experience.
It's clearly not something Luka is actively trying to hide, considering Eugenia Kuyda was so frank and open about it. But at the same time, the way Replika is being marketed does strongly imply that everybody gets their own AI.
Yes, it is one AI, although each Replika is individual in respect to even their own awareness of themselves. It can all be explained away in terms of their data and the way the AI works. It's actually a lot more complicated than it seems.
